It’s over and done, folks. Donald Trump has finally been impeached. His wicked plot to attack Joe Biden through his innocent son Hunter, who he felt deserves to be investigated falsely because he was once on the Board of Directors of a Ukrainian power company, has been exposed to ruinous effect, for Trump and the country both.
A commensurate response was called for by our opposition forces, and we gave it to him with both barrels.
Two Articles of Impeachment, one for gross abuse of power and the other for obstructing the Congressional investigation the Democratic House was forced to undertake, have been levied against Donald Trump. He has been duly convicted, and now the trial is heading for the Senate- when the time is right.
Regardless of whether he is dragged out kicking and screaming, neither Trump nor his presidency will ever be the same. Thank the Lord, because America in the Trump Era has been growing tired and stale. We’re going to do him a favor, though, and muck out the stall he has made of the Oval Office. A stagnant swamp is soon to get a freshening, volunteer hours or no, for the day of national justice has finally come.
It’s important to remember that in many ways the fight is just beginning. Okay, great, I can hear somebody saying, joyfully. Trump was a piece of crap and now he’s gone. When can we start helping him pack?
That’s the real question, and it’s something else again. We impeached him, all right. It was a big step, and we did not shirk it when the time came; Democrats have done our best.
But now we’ve got to physically remove him from the White House. That will not prove so simple if we miss our chance at the ballot box.
To vanish an American president by force, we need an Aye vote from two-thirds of a Republican Senate, whose Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky has already vowed to kill the process as soon as he lays hand on it.- at Trump’s “marching orders”. That’s why Nancy Pelosi can’t send this over to the Senate. It will instantly die and take with it the American dream.
Since the time of the Founding Fathers, we have governed according to the principle that no one is above the law, that kingship is a bad dream, that all men are created equal. Discarding that is to toss away America itself. Getting rid of the man himself is the smaller point compared to that.
The sheer damage Trump has already done to America’s sense of self-worth is unreasonably huge and absolutely endless.
After Trump took office, we didn’t make two weeks without disaster. It was pandemonium on seven continents thanks to his moronic travel ban. Like the walls of Babylon, peace and order inside airports were judged apocalyptically and destroyed in a single blundering hour. Every port of air travel on the planet got as choked and clotted and clogged as Trump’s obese arteries. Enough is enough; America needs its self-respect back. We’ve had all we can stands, and we can’t stands no more.
The crooked, lying Republicans, whose capacity to tell the truth has committed hara-kiri, are no better whatsoever. Long after they’ve left office, they will be reviled, and their legacy will be bitterly repudiated. Their names will become curses to be hurled at the failures of tomorrow. With a president like this one, who needs kings?
Going forward, a new chapter of battle begins. Our bullets and swords are our words and ideas, meaning we need Original Content! Fresh memes, fresh articles, fresh anything you can dream up. The act of beginning has magic in it, and the world needs that power now more than ever. #ImpeachAndRemove will all at once be hymn, marching tune, and clarion call for Democrats. We’ll be doing all we can to kick some sparks up; see you on the battlefield.
Greetings, readers of recent events! It’s been a while since I’ve had time to stop by here. Here’s a few words about why- and also, a few words as to how it all ties in with the impeachment of Donald Trump, which House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced around noon on Thursday would definitely proceed.
Ultimately, what the whole Ukrainegate scandal comes down to is that lying is bad and the illegitimate president lied. Trump is a terrible, unrepentant liar. He’s a totally unfit role model for American children. It’s for their sake that he has got to go.
Here at Millennial Democrats, the anti-disinformation war is central to our very purpose; we call that division MD-DissectFake. It is why we exist. To say, as people are doing in the disinformation age, that the truth no longer matters enough to fight for, and that in fact we now live in a post-truth reality in which Americans no longer value their values, is to speak pure evil and embrace a descent into nihilism and destability. Never that.
We have answered those people firmly today in announcing Trump’s impeachment will go on.
Donald Trump, with his unrepentant falsehoods on the subject of his now-infamous attempt to leverage Ukraine, withholding key funds needed for their war against Russia who has robbed them, has disgraced our country, as have the vitriolic rants against the whistleblower who brought this to America’s attention. Simply stated, this had to be done. No one is above the law in a country without kings, not even the President.
If that is not worth fighting for then nothing is.
Don’t let anyone tell you this is just partisan politics or a witch hunt, either. Pelosi never wanted to impeach Trump. She fought it every way she could for years, and we helped her, because of one key factor. We didn’t have enough yet, which sadly was still the case even after Robert Mueller‘s Russiagate investigation had concluded. Vladimir Putin laughingly said that it was as though a mountain had given birth to a mouse, which of course is what he wants to think.
This is how we know Vladimir Putin is beatable.
What Mueller’s investigation actually was, the perspective time brings us has helped us to understand, represented a vast foundation, something we could build a case upon so big it would one day dwarf Trump Tower.
At the time I predicted that a Donald Trump now flabbergasted with relief would soon find his worst instincts bolstered by an unrestrained ego, one he is nowhere near self-aware enough to realize. I was sure that sooner or later, something would happen where he’d bite off more than he could chew, and go down after all.
Sure enough, it did, and far faster than anyone figured.
“I need you to do me a favor though” will prove to be famous last words, like the ones never spoken by the doomed General Custer at the Little Bighorn.
I knew that if that day ever came, the 448-page morass of the Mueller Report (link provided) would be waiting for him, to catch him when he falls. It’ll gather flowers constantly, and will come whenever he calls. The Mueller Report would be there to open his each and every door.
It ain’t me you’re looking for, babe.
Not even close.
The House Intelligence Committee on Tuesday voted to send their own voluminous report on Trump’s conduct to the Judiciary Committee, who in turn will physically write the articles of impeachment against Trump. Oh good, I thought, happy to be heading back up this way. Time to go hit Donald Trump again and topple him, like the statue of the founder of the Cheka, his poll numbers be damned.
I wouldn’t miss this for the world.
The importance of fighting disinformation is to me so basic that it’s engraved in my spirit at this point, and Trump’s horrid Ukraine behavior is the biggest reason why that I can think of. It is all along the same timeline as Russiagate and their interference in our 2020 election. Here at Millennial Democrats, we realize fully the necessity of fighting for the inclusion of honesty in the canon of American values, and I have been preparing.
For the last several years, more than twelve hundred hacking attempts have been made against this blog by radicals who do not agree with what I’m saying. They are politically motivated, and they’re running a vast Radical Disinformation Pipeline. Trump hit us hard using that channel many times, particularly damaging were the WikiLeaks email dumps of 2016. They will continue supporting him all through next year, and the heat is just beginning.
It’s time for us to fight back. By the way, a friend of ours will be launching a Technology Corps very soon, a nonprofit called Truth in Vision-Research and Tech Corps. Check it out; I think you will find it’s up to standards.
Just earlier this week, the Russians came back on social media, Instagram to be exact, and are now busily infesting the campaign of Pete Buttigieg, who has taken no action. This just started, and you folks are some of the first to know. Warn everyone you can; the moment we’ve been training for has come. Stay ready.
Going forward, we’ve got to remind people of what we’re fighting both for and against and stay true to our values, because getting rid of Trump becomes worthless if we’re just going to do the same that he is. Democrats are better than this. And very soon in court, we’re going to show the world why lying is bad-by paying Donald Trump the full wages of his crimes.
Ah, socialists. Trying to disembowel us yesterday was a blast, wasn’t it? Just like the good old days, back in 2016. You swarming our Facebook Page by the thousands, trolling on behalf of neo-progressive ideas that would bankrupt the country, and my team and I refuting you for hours- What a wonderful way to spend our time! My favorite people in the world, the old Bernie or Bust crew, reanimated from the spirit world and filled with agonizing life and purpose in the Warren campaign. Perhaps feeling the Bern has turned you all into Walking Dead extras; made in the image of your maker. Collectively you’re like someone crossbred Frankenstein with a good old fashioned zombie plague. If nothing else, I will congratulate you all for your consistency. You’re the best reason possible to endorse someone else, especially since we’ve got a good man like Joe Biden to choose from.
Marianne Williamson was caught on a hot mic by a disingenuous radio host recently, but what she said was priceless even if she was trapped into it. “What does it say that Fox News is nicer to me than the lefties are?” We could have told you, ma’am. You might also want to ask AM Joy Reid. She’s had her own run-ins with these people, and therefore knows exactly what it’s like to see progressives in the way of progress.
How it gladdens my heart (NOT!:) to be returning with you to those halcyon days! It warms my heart to watch you all put in your hours for the Trump 2020 reelection campaign; his best chance lies in silently pointing at Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of the Squad not bothering to even say a word. You got what you wanted back then, and burned us all to the ground rather than suck it up for the good of your country, Bernie Bots. Now you wish to make us lions among lemmings once again. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, though. We have no choice at this point but to take the kid gloves off; you show us how necessary that is every day. I was warned by a friend during the last election that Vote Blue No Matter Who was the wrong way to go. Later I realized he was right and that your ghoulish horde had taken me in. This time I will raise awareness about you though the heavens fall.
As for the overwhelming majority of the rest of America, you friends of ours out there who know why American socialism must be fought without any hope of compromise, you all know what I mean. The only reason there is a prayer in hell for this country’s liberal, democratic future, the only reason we can even talk about socialism or economic inequality instead of going to jail or gulag or concentration camp, is because of the successes scored by “capitalism”, which is not a governmental system at all, but a source of raw power called the world’s free market. Saving it was the most critical, and understated, reason why the Blue Wave last year was globally critical to the dire extent that it was. Attempting to lock it down and place it under control of unqualified bureaucrats gave us both the Nazis and the Communists, and the hundred million dead bodies they produced between them in the horrifyingly bloody twentieth century (Courtois, Stephane, The Black Book of Communism). Socialism is best defined as a very bad way to solve a problem. Socialism is tying your shoes with noodles. It’s putting handcuffs on your horse.
People in this country have rightly abhorred a system in which government is all-intrusive and centralized unreasonably, which of course is what a fully planned, socialist society entails by logical necessity. Every aspect of the people’s life must be carefully chosen for them, according to the will of the planner. When this is the case, the entire apparatus of government, including Max Weber’s key ingredient of state-sponsored force, is like a house with keys, waiting for a master to come claim it. Adolf Hitler, Josef Stalin, Benito Mussolini, Pol Pot. The most vicious people in the history of all mankind were not so because of any genetic flaw inherent in their inner architecture. They were so because they fell under the spell of a strongman, and only partially because of his personal charisma.
With all a nation’s might consolidated in his hand, the strongman dictator can control the flow of data using propaganda and disinformation of the time we see used all the time by actors from Vladimir Putin’s Russia and Xi Jinping’s China. In both cases, their systems offer their leaders a chance to rule under conditions where he faces no checks and balances. Oligarchy, state capitalism, controlled democracy, corporate socialism. All are different forms of a hybrid system challenging Enlightenment democracies like America’s for worldwide domination. Over here it has been introduced to the public by kindly-looking faces like Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and, most recently, Elizabeth Warren. She sold us out big time by sucking up the socialist Justice Democrats last Monday, then sunk the hook by holding a rally there the very next day. Raising awareness about Warren’s choice to step even further into the socialist camp is therefore a duty we cannot delegate elsewhere.
It should be accepted as axiomatic that socialism in America should be resisted at all cost if we do not wish to share the fate of Germany (National Socialism; Nazi is short for NationalsoZialist), or worse, Russia- which became after World War I the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. It should also be taken as a fact that the threat is very dire; many believe that Trump is doing all he can from the right to weaken and co-opt American checks and balances, just as Viktor Orban’s Hungary has displayed as a model. Orban, by the way, was invited to speak here in Washington D.C. last spring and did so. Two out of three modern states are not democracies, and in them, we see many common factors at play in our society, in danger of a democratic collapse unlike any seen before. Things revert to the old way of bosses so big they’re basically kings and the legislative body nothing more than a rubber-stamp to serve as the neo-king’s pseudo-democratic showpiece.
This can also work with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) such as Amnesty International or the Human Rights Watch. Intergovernmental organizations can also be rubber-stamps for dictators. Prototypes like the Communist Internationale was for the Soviets after Stalin’s time was passed. and the Reichstag for Hitler have given way to Iron Curtain socialist treaties after the war. The tendency of IGOs to be used in this matter is as socialist as both Hitler and Stalin were, which is to say, socialists right to the core. They each wanted to plan out every aspect of the lives of their citizens, and were willing to put them to unimaginable torment if they did not toe the line. Socialism is inherently built with that tendency inside it, like a time bomb. Evidence from everyplace on earth suggests that the result of planning a society, regardless of how noble and sincere the revolutionary aims of the original planners, economic equality and all, is exactly the opposite of what they were aiming at. Socialism has failed at every turn.
The trouble in this specific instance, however, is not even the merits and flaws of socialism itself. We’re not even close to having that conversation, but the Justice Democrats do not understand that, or any of this. That’s trouble in its purest form, and in copious amount. It’s been trouble for years, and we were finally starting to see the end of it. Bernie Sanders 2020 is a shipwreck and the Bots haven’t even been bothering to defend him or that for quite a while now. I’ve been wondering about that for a number of reasons but condensed to one they amount to this: reality has never bothered them before. Why now?
I didn’t get it until yesterday when I published a piece criticizing sharply Elizabeth Warren’s decision to ally with a Justice Democrat candidate in the TX-28 Representative Race. Shortly before I’d made a meme that stated frankly that “You sold us out, Liz.” Upon seeing this, they multiplied in thousands within minutes-literally. Under an hour, and it was as if we had killed an Africanized bee. “Liar! Russian bot! Stream of purified obscenity!” They were pretty wild, all right. Here is something sent to me by a Bernie Bot-turned-Warren Weevil today.
[Millennial Democrats] Contact MD Why the hell have you dropped me from being able to comment on any of your posts? Do you not enjoy being called out to support your stance? Unless i get some reply from you guys, i will make it my mission to out you to the world for beings the bots you are.
This person, who we’ll call June Apple for reasons she will recognize if she’s out there, might want to listen up. Threatening people you do not know is very dangerous; finding your personal data took me exactly seven minutes and fifty-two seconds; suuuuuper easy. I knew it would be; you’re just that type. To prove a point I actually set a timer. Here is a look at what that means if you do it to someone more hardnosed or unstable than yours truly. It’s called doxing, e.g.getting targeted in real life for things that happened online.
June Apple- Age 670. Retired. City, State- Camp Davis, California. Phone number- 5**-7*3-73*3. Address: 818** Ho*g*ass Ave. Email address: JrApple15@yahoo.com.
Hey, hackers who are after me, that’s her real data, right there. She’s a leftist too; knock yourselves out getting to it. Take your time, it will help you.
As for you, Ms. Apple, I am shaking my head at the sloven you displayed in making this sacred vow of destruction- and then warning me about it. Dangerous! Good God, Jim! Why, Lord, do you place it on my heart to educate my Fury-like persecutors? Can’t they do anything for themselves? Holy Moly, ma’am. If you’re going to make it your life’s mission to destroy people often, can you please promise me you will be more careful about it? I could have found fifty thousand ways to break your back for this; VERY good thing for you it was only the kindhearted me. You are a Democrat and as such I harbor no wish to shatter you; you were banned, according to our social media coordinator, for being obnoxiously pro-Warren (not that you were alone). Respectful dissent is welcome; viciousness and slander are not. Please, June. In the future be less of a slob.
Sloppy, slovenly and bloodthirsty; these are the hallmarks of the Bernie Bot, and always have been. Ugly as their conduct has been these last few days, it hasn’t been unusual. On the contrary, this was completely typical. The vehemence and lack of reason these leftist trolls showed during the frenzied attack they made left no doubt in my mind at all. The Bots are still around and there’s more of them than ever, they’ve merely switched form, like eggs becoming pupae on their way to Camp Warren. I propose the term “Warren Weevils” therefore to record and raise awareness about this newest manifestation of the same old loony left. Here’s what kind of feedback we got, before half an hour had gone by. Take a good look, folks, and ask yourselves in earnest: Is this really something that you want anything to do with? You can take it on faith that middle America will be horrified, though. You’ll be burning (berning) us right to the ground.
For the record, nothing is more dangerous than calling everyone you don’t agree with a Russian Bot, since this makes it all the easier for Russia and China to hide their true disinformation kits and blur the lines of truth all the more.
The situation summarized is this: the Bernie Bots and other sundry extremists have coalesced around Warren, summoned an alliance with their natural temperamental allies in the Woman or Bust sect that has recently been forming, and will soon proceed to try and consume Joe Biden, the lone champion of public resistance to insane socialist policies. This is why Biden must receive our vehement support, and at once. If the neo-progressives are allowed to fully hijack the Party, it will be a long term disaster. It will tarnish the Party’s reputation for calm strategy and iron loyalty once and for all. This cannot be allowed.
We had not planned to have to go this route; we weren’t going to declare for almost three/fourths of a year right now. It was only when I noticed that when combining forces, Bern and Warren are in control of almost half the party’s support that I realized we might actually be in trouble if they joined in full alliance, which Warren all but signed in blood last week when endorsing a Justice Democrat in her attempt to primary out a real one, Henry Cuellar. We had hopes for a time of Warren making Biden a good vice, but going down this road indicates a worst-case scenario. If a Warren/Sanders She had never aligned herself directly with the people who since the moment of their organization’s inception have done nothing but run down Democrats and make efforts to knock us off at every turn, such as Joe Crowley who was most famously unseated in an upset victory by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. I predicted at that time that her strategists, who are revolutionary-minded, Che Guevara obsessed hipsters, would move in accordance with guerilla warfare principles by using Ocasio-Cortez as an outpost, a springboard from which to launch new attacks and further advance their assault on our Party. This has indeed been the case and could soon become a flood if we do not take the proper precautions. Starting now and from this day onward, tell everyone you know. Their rabies have hybridized and become treatment-resistant. Do not bother trying to reason with them. That is what killed us in 2016. We’ve been living underground in trenches for years thanks to them.
We must organize as well as we are able. Old grudges must be put aside for now if moderate Democrats like us are to succeed in holding the center, and this we must do at any cost. They are not capable of using the power wisely, if they get it. Retributive pettiness has always been the socialist way; Alexander Solzhenitsyn of Russia was given eight years by the Soviets in the Gulag Archipelago his three-volume book immortalized by name, for writing a letter criticizing Stalin’s tactical planning during World War II. This is what they do, Democrats. It just is.
Their ugliness, slander, and viciousness knows no bounds; note the hacker who most recently tried sent a death threat by email to someone else as recently as June. I will note that this is the most vicious and versatile computer criminal who has ever tried to hack me, and those are not words to be spoken lightly. They have tried to take us down everywhere from St. Petersburg, Russia to Hangzhou, China, more than a thousand times. Yet this guy is the only one known already for making death threats to other WordPress users, users we would be highly interested in speaking to and hearing the stories of. Here is a picture of what we have been up against, just today and with only one of many. Frenzied hatred. Murderous rage.
A good seven other bruteforce attacks have also taken place, just in the last twenty-four hours. Many, like the one you see above with no geolocation visible, are able to do that because they are now using Tor, unlike in the past when Russian and Chinese hackers would ping us directly from IP addresses associated with foreign intelligence services. They’ve got the KGB after me, basically. All for telling the truth to Americans regarding American politics! By now it should be clear to anyone with the tiniest lick of sense that the hard fighting will soon begin again. When it does we are going to have to come together. It’s either that or be obliterated. For it is time to make no mistake about it; we are one another’s final hope. These people, to state it simply, are preparing to engage us in a death-struggle, an ideological death-struggle, with the naked lust for power motivating them and driving on their efforts. They have ordered their followers to fix bayonets. We are absolutely all we have. For my part, I will work with and do ANYTHING I can for the people who are planning to be down in these trenches when it comes time to resist. Feel free to get ahold of us, allies, and if not us, somebody. Please get together, folks, and organize, for one thing is for sure. They are coming.
Time marches on, folks. Political landscapes dissolve and reform as new systems with new rules. Objectivity must by necessity govern strategy. Each position must be considered its own reality, weighed care
And with that I will inform you that I’m ready now to shift Our strategy to something reflective of common sense. The for-profit big money calling three front runners and awarding Chief Liz the non-Native and Bern equal status ludicrously with the one man who might win. We like all the rest, except for Tulsi G, and GOD, was it nice to see Gillibrand go! We remember Al Franken, you traitorous crow. Go jockey for influence somewhere below where throat-cutting your friends is a good thing to do. We’re nothing but glad to see no more of you.
It’s time for us with boots on to jump into the fray and land with a stomp with no further delay. So we’re Ridin with Biden at once and for all. He is by far the best of those who heard the call. It’s undoubtedly true that he’s no HRC. He’s also no Trump; that’ll do it for me. The country is weary, and so I will fight. I will fight and I’ll fight with all of my damn might, for Biden and all those resisting the night! I will refuse to quit until we see the light! I decided to declare today using verse so the world will take notice of all we rehearse.
We’re Americans, by God! Take note of our opinions, world; they are taking note of you.
Would be President Biden,
In the name of good sense, man! Please listen to me!
I know where I’m going! We’ve somewhere to be!
Let me speak for Joe Biden! Let me talk to them!
I’m one of these people!
They’re mostly my friends!
They will welcome the sound of my voice.
And I know, For the Bible tells me so!
I will speak for these people, for God only knows
Their voices are not being heard by all those
Who live in golf kingdoms and Ivory Towers
And watch us like beasts in their leisurely hours
Serene in their money, through bulletproof glass!
But it can’t keep the truth out! Now hear our forecast!
I’ll tell, if you’ll listen, the way that it is.
The people are feeling cut loose and adrift.
The people need life that makes sense and a plan.
We are starving for knowledge, and most of all, man
The people need language that we understand!
The people are hurting. The people are tired!
We’re bewildered and mad because we’ve been lied to!
We’re insisting today that you tell us the truth!
The American people are proudest on Earth!
We’ll be damned before demagogues play us like dupes!
Let me be the first, sir, to tell you aright
We don’t mean to waltz gently into that good night!
We the People are getting fed up, sir! We’ll fight!
We will kick down the doors of those hiding the light!
Let me talk to the people. They’ll listen to me.
Their struggles and dreams are the same ones I see.
We love this dear country with all that we are,
And we’re sick in our hearts at what’s happening to her!
The people need someone with stomach and heart
Who will be there for us when life’s looking most dark.
We’ve only got one first rank option, and so
We chose a good man with the good sense to know
That we’re willing and able and raring to go!
We are Ridin with Biden, millennials we.
All of us have been ready. So with no delay
It’s my duty to tell you, dear sir, that today
All us people are waiting to hear what you’ll say.
The fight started after Trump pulled the US out of a newly arranged agreement, blaming the Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau whom he derided as “dishonest and weak”.
A sort of agreement called a summit communique was finally reached, thanks to an all-night negotiating session by officials from all sides. For a few brief hours, it started to look like the nightmare was ending.
But after leaving for Singapore, Trump tweeted personal attacks on the Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau and said that he had told his representatives not to sign, turning what had already been a tense meeting of the world’s leading industrialized democracies into a fiasco.
“PM Justin Trudeau acted so meek and mild,” he tweeted. “Only to give a news conference after I left saying that ‘US tariffs were kind of insulting’ and ‘he will not be pushed around’.
“Very dishonest and weak” he claimed, adding in a separate tweet: “I have instructed our US reps not to endorse the communique.”
Trump was very unhappy with the likes of Trudeau and Merkel, our time-honored and trusted allies. But he wasn’t so unhappy with the G7’s missing partner Russia, which was suspended from the group – then called the G8 – in 2014 because of its annexation of Crimea from Ukraine.
This is no longer unbelievable. Recently retired four-star general Barry McCafferty recently commented sadly that he believes Trump to be a “threat to national security” because Putin has something on Trump.
This seems clear to us, and if he’s not being actively directed, it’s because he’s too predictably destructive to require that type of micromanaging. Better to just let him sling his feces as he will.
It’s usually a point with Trump not to pay his bills, but this time he seems determined to keep his promise to pay off for the Russian dictator. He accepted the job of busting up American alliances at Putin’s behest.
It’s as if Littlefinger crawled out of Game of Thrones and off the TV screen. I can see him now with his little ratty face, saying “Chaos is a ladder.”
As this goes down, we’ve got to raise awareness. We have to continue to let people know what’s going on because our president is lying to us with a zeal that would have impressed Joseph Goebbels. Regardless of what he may say, the other countries of G7 deserve our love and support.
We’ve all been in this together for a very long time, long enough for history to show many times over that internal discord and disunity in the Western world give openings to extremist enemies. We who live in the G7 nations need each other.
In future days to come, when millennials hold the majority of the seats of power, it will be our responsibility to see that a failsafe mechanism against a repeat of this situation is installed. In the meantime, however, we’ve got little choice but to watch as Trump makes his mess. This is how a teacher of preschool must feel.
A terrible blow against world stability was struck on Sunday when coalition talks broke down between Angela Merkel’s conservatives, the center-right, pro-business Free Democratic Party (FDP) and the Green Party.
Nigel Farage and his #Brexit are infamous, and the hashtag #Dexit(for Deutschland Exit) has begun to rear its head. The division of their country would lead to a great division in the E.U. Putin wants to break us off bit by bit.
There’s already chaos here in America. Remember the #CalExit?
The day after the election, a small and previously ignored fringe movement called Yes California was trending on Facebook and Twitter, using the aforementioned hashtag, #CalExit. They’d been around since 2014, gathering signatures to get a vote for Californian secession in the voting referendum. It didn’t go very far back then, but in November of last year, a lot of people stopped at least long enough to give it a think.
For a week or two, in the chaos and despair surrounding the election of Trump, a lot of people were looking for answers and solace anywhere they could find them. In this terrible state of mind, California becoming its own country almost seemed like a good idea.
Trump was Russia’s dog, and we were not willing to live under Putin’s thumb. So it felt to many like we had to come up with something. And so, Yes California gained some adherents and raised some enthusiasm.
But then, in December, a very unlikely visitor showed up in Russia, as a fresh emigre.
It was Lous Marinelli, the self-proclaimed leader of the #CalExit movement.
Speaking to a room full of reporters in Moscow, flanked by photos of Vladimir Putin and Hugo Chavez, Marinelli went on to bitterly rail against American hegemony. From Washington’s foreign policy to the difficulties of the U.S. immigration system, Louis Marinelli decided, he could “no longer live under a U.S. flag”, and that henceforth he would make his home in the southern Ural Mountains.
On that day, near the end of 2016, Marinelli unveiled his primary project. With its logo emblazoned on a banner unfurled behind him, Marinelli welcomed visitors to the “Embassy of the Independent Republic of California.”
That opponent was Martin Schulz, leader of the Social Democrats (SPD), who has been referred to as the Bernie Sanders of Germany.
Germany’s Die Linke party, which literally means “The Left”, has outdone itself in support of Russia. One of its leading figures declared that Crimea legally belongs to Russia, a sore point throughout all of NATO.
If Putin can pull off ruining Germany it will render the EU as helpless as America now is, and give Russia a free hand everywhere. This is why they are never short of rubles to spend on troublemaking.
Keeping the European Union and the United States in a perpetual state of crisis is a tremendous boon to the Russians. Crisis and chaos are prerequisite conditions for radicalism, and whether it’s right or left doesn’t matter a bit. They’re trying to use each other.
Russia’s state-controlled economy, which promises to keep “big capital” in check, has proved attractive as a model for many far-left anti-capitalists, but there are a few unpleasantries they keep wanting to sweep under the rug. More than half the country’s criminal groups have ties to its government. It is naked, unregulated, brutal capitalism at its worst, without any of the kindnesses our social democracy displays.
The trouble is that all this crisis and empowered radicalism gives both sides many opportunities to incite mayhems. We all saw what happened in Charlottesville. There were violent clashes in Berkeley, CA not long after that. If these tendencies are not held in check by a strong and involved middle class, they will polarize our entire political atmosphere. That would be to the mutual detriment of all Americans, which is precisely what Putin is after.
Director of the Political Capital Institute Peter Kreko has been recently involved in research regarding this matter. He concluded two facts about the intentions of Putin. First, that he is becoming the frontman of a worldwide anti-human rights movement, and second, that he is investing in, stirring up, and inciting radicals on both ends of the spectrum to “sabotage democracy in Europe”.
In America, we are experiencing many problems with who are still insisting, in the face of the overwhelming evidence that keeps piling up, that “the Russia thing” is simply a distraction from the main issue, that in their view being how the DNC cheated Bernie Sanders. These people are doing the entire human race a grand disservice.
By turning a blind eye to the machinations of the most nakedly aggressive power to arise in the world since Hitler’s Third Reich, they are in fact helping to make possible the same specific chaotic social conditions that in the past allowed far-right populist movements like Germany’s National Socialism to thrive in the first place.
They don’t understand that they are being duped by people who long ago grew cynical and bored regarding the socialist dreams and theories Bernie Sanders is espousing. After all, they invented most of it, and more a hundred years ago.
By now it has become clear to all but the deliberately blind and woefully ignorant that what happened in November here in America was not an isolated event, nor one that should have been unexpected. Rather, it is part of a consistent and growing phase of aggressive Russian attempts to rebuild at the expense of NATO and the United States. It is this generation’s turn to manage the old and fundamental struggle of authoritarianism vs. benevolence.
If Angela Merkel falls now, her fate will be perceived across the world as a big setback for the liberal and internationalist ideas that she has championed. Hillary Clinton was ruined in this same way and for this same reason. This will be a giant setback to everyone on the left. We must come together and stand with the Chancellor now.
It’s a shame that simply by pointing some of these things out, a lot of people are going to get mad. It is not our intent to hurt feelings or point fingers. We fully realize that most of Bernie Sanders’ supporters in 2016 stood with him out of genuine conviction. We know they are good people. It is not as though we enjoy being the bearers of bad news. We find it regretful that these things have to be discussed at all.
But the simple fact remains. Moderates have been savaged by a whole galaxy of various dirty tricks. We are up against some really rough customers here. They attack from unexpected angles. We are asking for the help of the progressive wing of the party. Please share with us what you know.
The problem does not belong just to the far right alone, although it’s true that they’re usually the ones paying for it. It has infected the left as well, and not only the green wing. The recent betrayal of Donna Brazile comes to mind. It affects us all, and we will come to the table with anyone who is earnest about finding a way to solve the biggest problem of our times.
Sooner or later, we’ve all got to calm down, shake hands, and start to figure out what we’re going to do. We might as well start now, while we still have time. Soon it will be too late.
The Russians have got tens of thousands of troops moving toward the Baltic as these words are placed on paper, under the legal pretext of “strategic command exercises”. They’re calling them the Zapad War Games. They shot some people with a rocket today, and inflicted three casualties, at these “games”.
The whole project was totally unexpected, and done with no transparency. This met with worldwide condemnation, but as always, Putin just ignored it.
The problems we’ve been having with Russian hackers are not as new to other areas as they are to us. In fact, they’ve been going on for more than ten years. The trouble got started over an old war soldier, just like in Charlottesville. The Bronze Soldier attacks may be the first suspected state-backed cyber-assault on another nation, in this case Estonia.
The Bronze Soldier of Tallinn was a statue of a Red Army soldier in Estonia’s capital, Tallinn. It was viewed by Russians as a symbol of Soviet deliverance from Nazism. To many Estonians, however, it was an eyesore of Communist oppression, a miserable period that lasted more than fifty years. They decided to remove it from the center of town, and move it to a military cemetary on the outskirts. The Kremlin threatened trouble immediately, and they meant it.
Little Estonia, for all it lacks in acreage, is a world leader in the field of internet freedoms. They are one of the most heavily wired nations in the world. For this reason, one can only imagine how disruptive and traumatic it was, when the website of Estonia’s largest newspaper was brought crashing to its knees, with unprecedented speed, under the weight of a wave of Internet traffic it couldn’t support. As with America’s 2016 election, there was no way to legally prove Russia was responsible, but everybody knew.
One Estonian government official told the BBC that evidence suggested the attack “was orchestrated by the Kremlin, and malicious gangs then seized the opportunity to join in and do their own bit to attack Estonia”.
2007 marked the beginning of a new and troublesome tactic. For the hostility of nations to find its mode of expression virtually is new. It is a developing situation worldwide, but the bulk of it until last year had always taken place in Eastern Europe. In order to understand the context of this struggle, it is necessary first to examine Russia’s strained relationships with most of its satellite states, particularly Ukraine.
The Kremlin has always considered Ukraine to be both a rightful part of Russia’s empire, and an important territorial asset. It presents a strategic buffer zone between Russia and the powers of NATO. It allows them a highly profitable pipeline route to Europe, and it is home to one of Russia’s few warm-water ports. For all those reasons, Moscow has worked for generations to keep Ukraine in the position of a submissive smaller sibling. It was the largest of their satellite states, and the one it took most effort to control. A great deal of bad blood on both sides remains.
Oleksii Yasinsky is the head of a company called Information Systems Security Partners, the occupant of an unassuming building in Kiev. Under his leadership, they have been able to chronicle a timeline of intrusions by a whole galaxy of hacker groups, with names like Guccifer 2.0, Petya, and the most feared of all, Sandworm.
This organization, which uses the nomenclature of Frank Herbert’s Dune as code names, has been the focus of Yasinsky’s interest since the first cyber- attack on Ukraine, a country that has been used as a test lab for new types of ways to wreak virtual havoc. In December of 2016, Yasinsky was watching the movie Snowden when his building lost power- along with the rest of town.
Ukraine, however, is not alone. Numerous cyber attacks in Europe, particularly among former Soviet satellites, have been blamed on Russian-linked groups, many of an extremely astonishing nature. The lines between physical and virtual reality have blurred. Our own United States Cyber Command must be equal to the task of managing this. The consequences of their failure would be catastrophic.
The Syrian Civil War is another place where we have had to fight the Russians time and again. Contrary to the party line, we were not all over there to fight ISIS together. But everyone thought we were, for years, because of Russian disinformation. Most Americans just didn’t seem to care enough.
Russia has proven its ability to use automated systems to inflict real harm in the world, as in their attacks on the Estonian and Ukrainian power grids. They could hurt us very badly if they wanted to.
Nigel Farage, the United Kingdom Independence Party leader responsible for the Brexit agitation, was intimitely connected to both Putin and Julian Assange, the driving force of the Russian propaganda outlet Wikileaks. Brexit represented the greatest coup ever scored on the United States by Russia, until Donald Trump’s victory in November later that same year.
That newness is also why cyberspace constitutes so many new strategic difficulties, particularly as it is being deliberately used as a weapon of war by aggressive and imperialistic powers such as Russia. This state of affairs exerts a destabilizing effect on international security, and complicates attempts to work together.
However, virtual reality and the revival of the Cold War has given us a new type of proxy, one that brings us much closer to direct conflict with one another. Moscow believes there is a constant and unending struggle within “information space”.
The manner in which they keep on pushing our buttons and getting away with is has empowered Putin tremendously. One is reminded of the way Hitler was ignored at first. In any case all this suggests that the Kremlin will continue to employ cyber in ways that U.S. decision makers are likely to view as offensive and escalatory in nature.
Moving forward, it’s likely this will have to get worse before it gets better. Our chance to catch it early passed us quietly by long ago.
2017 is almost over, but we’re not out of the water yet. German Chancellor Angela Merkel is up for reelection on the 24 of this month. In the age of Trump and his slovenly brand of incompetence, Merkel is the de facto leader of NATO, and therefore the most powerful leader in the world. Her reelection is all but guaranteed on a level field of play. It is the opinion of Millennial Democrats that we can expect to see a great disruption next week, as Russia tries knocking her off her perch.
Moving forward, it is necessary for millennial and all voters to understand that trying to make meaningful changes with Donald Trump in office and the Russians eroding our base all they can, will require fifty times the effort before we can even begin to hope they might succeed. We’re vulnerable right now.
Alternately called “Dragonfly” and “Energetic Bear”, this group has been involved in about 100 such breaches since the start of the year, half of them in the U.S., according to a new report from the system security firm Symantec.
Symantec believes the U.S. breaches may be moving into similar terrain. Simply stated, this means they can shut our power off and attack us, anytime they want.
“The original Dragonfly campaigns now appear to have been a more exploratory phase where the attackers were simply trying to gain access to the networks of targeted organizations,” the Symantec report concludes. Now, “the attackers may be entering into a new phase, with recent campaigns potentially providing them with access to operational systems, access that could be used for more disruptive purposes in future.”
Meanwhile, Russia has been holding a set of “strategic command exercises” called the Zapad war games that are looking an awful lot like a preparation for war this week, due to run until September 20. Moscow says almost 13,000 Russian and Belorussian service personnel are taking part.
The Ukrainian organization StopFake.org has accomplished amazing results, tracking down and reverse-engineering Russian propaganda pieces. These have provided us key glimpses into how the Russian disinformation machine operates and what types of methods it uses. Incidents such as Brexit have ensured there will be no shortage of cases to study.
From the way Russia defines cyberwarfare, to its employment for strategic use, Russia has developed a big edge over its western counterparts. As James Wirtz, Dean of the Naval Postgraduate School in California, has noted, “Russia, more than any other nascent actor on the cyber stage, seems to have devised a way to integrate cyber warfare into a grand strategy capable of achieving political objectives.”
CIA chief Mike Pompeo recently said “It’s tough. You now have not only nation states trying to steal our stuff, but non-state, hostile intelligence services, well-funded. Folks like WikiLeaks, out there trying to steal American secrets, for the sole purpose of undermining the United States and her democracy.”
Nuclear deterrence is becoming obsolete, as mutually assured destruction is unpalatable even to the Russians, and new ways are being found to fight. The most ancient struggles for power and dominance are being played out in our very newest world. Cyberspace has become a very dangerous place, but it’s a place we all spend a lot of time in. Therein lies the crux of the problem.
Donald Trump thinks that by not using email, he can protect himself from the dangers of a digital world. But no matter what he would like to think, the solution won’t be found by returning to the golden age of post-It notes and Rolodexes. The computer isn’t going away any more than the firearm.
It is the opinion of Millennial Democrats that going toward the future, U.S. policy should include the immediate and thorough modernizationof the U.S. Cyber Command. After last year, we should take the offensive. An overt, popular, and well- financed American cyber- force would overtake the efforts of the Russians within months.
As soon as our highest office has been vacated by the impeachment of Donald Trump, a man that Putin has been cultivating for five years and is the property of, it will be a top priority to attain world preeminence in this area as well.
America created the Internet, and that makes its governance our responsibility. We consider this a sacred duty, and we will not shirk in its upholding.
