Why Entertainment Network Fox “News” Is Literally And Legally Fake.

Fox News is nothing more than lies and slander and conservative propaganda.

The entity known as the far-right conservative entertainment show Fox News Network has become a big problem for America. Under the reign of Donald Trump, which never would have been possible without them, a new Dark Ages era of falsehood and deception has begun. Their talking heads have become a sort of private-sector State TV, and by the day they become more brazen.

They are one of the main reasons why the World Freedom Index no longer rates America as a full democracy and haven’t in two years- since Trump took over. It is why last year’s Blue Wave was so globally critical.

Something has to stop them eventually, and the American people still can if they decide to rise up righteous. We’ve got to raise awareness about Fox “News”.  They are not a real news station legally as well as in fact. They are not subject to airwave regulation by the FCC because they are just a cable show.

They can lie whenever they want without any penalty. And they do!

Judging from current events, it’s hard to pick a winner as to which recent event inspired us to write this story now; any other day would have done as well. The now-infamous Pelosi hit video on “Lou Dobbs Tonight” seems a reasonable place to begin.

Facebook, which has resolved on being dishonest and Russian infested itself, refused to take it down, which got a lot of justified heat slung at them, but they weren’t the real culprits this time. Liar Fox hosts were, but that didn’t raise many eyebrows. The whole world has known for years they’re just right-wing talking heads. Most of us have long since gotten used to being lied to by Fox, and we know on whose behalf.

The Republican Party, and the monopoly capitalists worldwide who are footing the bill for them.

The Republican Party, or more accurately its extremist wing known as the Tea Party and Fox “News” have a lot in common. They have the same ostensible values, but more importantly, they share the same financiers. The New York Times did a piece in 2010 titled “The Billionaires Bankrolling the Tea Party.”

Libertarian Rupert Murdoch, the creator of Fox “News”, is a billionaire and was numbered in stone among their ranks before he retired. His fellow libertarians and allies Charles and David Koch of Koch Industries were the other chief culprits, unsurprisingly. Koch-supported lobbyists, foundations and political operatives are at the center of climate-science denial — a cause that forestalls threats to Koch Industries’ vast fossil fuel business.

Which “news network” has been pushing that line the loudest? We don’t even have to tell you.

As we have discussed many times on this blog, “libertarian” is the new word for monopoly capitalist, or fascist. Whenever you think of Charles and David Koch of Koch Industries, that’s who we’re talking about. A total media monopoly has been a Koch agenda item for years. Hawaiian representative Tulsi Gabbard, of all people, plays a strange role in their world. The arch-villains of Occupy Wall St, a dark money private political empire designed to promote far-right causes.

The Murdoch family is one of the biggest players. The amount of money they have formally given to the Republican Party is vast. Who knows what they’ve been up to since Citizens United? One can only speculate, and look at what we know for sure in the meantime.

Kathleen Ronayne at OpenSecrets.org put together the following statistics, leaving no doubt who Fox and the Republicans are getting their bread buttered by.

Since the 1990 election cycle, Murdoch has contributed about $750,000 to federal candidates and political committees, according to research by the Center for Responsive Politics.

Of that sum, 80 percent — or $600,200 — has benefited Republican candidates and committees, including a $250,000 contribution to the National Republican Senatorial Committee during the 1990s, when the committee could still accept unlimited “soft money” donations.

These days it’s the son of Rupert, Lachlan Murdoch, who has run the place since 2017, and he is no better than his father.

When he took over, he promptly sold nearly every anti-Trump asset they had to Disney, including the Simpsons, their one contribution to humanity. King of the Hill too, I suppose, but on the other hand, we lost Beavis and Butthead out of the deal.

Speaking as a private citizen, I don’t think it was worth it. Every day, like boll weevils, they eat away at the strands of what Americans believe is going on.

Earlier today, when Robert Mueller made his first public statement regarding the report that bears his name regarding the Russian interference in our election, they swung into action right away. Headlines bearing such trivial names as “Laura Ingraham says Mueller ‘attempting to resuscitate the corpse’ of his report'” and “Mueller statement made for ‘bad day’ for Pelosi, 2020 Dems, Trump campaign manager says” proliferated all over the Internet within an afternoon.

The people claiming that the contents of the Mueller Report are anything but a disaster of the highest scale for America are part of the problem, and as usual, Fox hosts are leading the charge. The wrigglings of Sean Hannity were as loathsome as those of Glenn Greenwald (almost; at least the former will admit what team he’s on). We’re not going to get into that in this article, however. We’re going to stick with Fox and hope that Mr. Mueller won’t mind too much our lack of focus in his work today.

Fox “News”, for never again will we write the very words without using quotation marks, a practice I am hoping will catch on, is not really a news station at all. It’s part of 21st Century Fox, a cable entertainment network, and this is of the utmost importance because it explains why they can lie to us this way so systematically.

MediaBiasFactCheck provides the background.

Founded in 1996 by Rupert Murdoch, Fox News Channel, also known as Fox News, (FNC) is an American basic cable and satellite news television channel that is owned by the Fox Entertainment Group, a subsidiary of 21st Century Fox.

Catch that? Entertainment! This will set the standard for our entire evaluation of this clumsy version of State TV we derisively call “Faux News”. Cable networks are not real news networks, at least not in the sense that the Big Three stations (NBC, ABC, CBS) are, because they do not go out over the airwaves. They are therefore not subject to Federal Communications Commission, or FCC, airwave regulation.

The FCC controls the airwaves. That’s their task. It’s their job. Their only job! And who among us has not asked before, with all the constant misinformation, the innumerable floods of lawsuits over wrong stories, the countless times they have been sued, why doesn’t the FCC do something?
Well, actually, for the same reason Robert Mueller didn’t charge Trump with a crime! They don’t have the legal right! The FCC has no jurisdiction over cable. Neither does CNN, of course, but they adhere to journalistic standards more than three-fourths of the time. Fox can’t even make halfway.
They only tell the truth on the air 42% of the time.
They’ve been using it as State TV, like in Russia, you know; the dictator’s mouthpiece, his most accessible way to lie directly to the people. But actually, it’s just like him, sham to the core and nowhere near the inner circle. We should be telling people this every time it comes up. Fox is NOT a news network because it doesn’t get to use the airwaves. It’s got to crawl through the ground like slithering worms in cables.

Cable television is far less regulated and held to standards far less rigorous than a real television station. They alone are the supreme arbiters of what they can say or not say during their slots of television, and cannot get in trouble for lying, which they do constantly. They are in no way the same as a Big Three airwave station.

To get our neighbors to see how worthless Fox really is, we need one simple equation and to raise awareness about it.

News is “fake news” if it has no journalistic standards, be they chosen or enforced by airwave laws and the FCC.

Those standards are defined by the journalistic tradition, and by national airwave laws.
Fox does not go out over airwaves, nor do they value journalistic standards.
Therefore, Fox = fake news.

Fox will lose all its power to mislead our people with lies if we raise enough awareness about this fact, which is, of course, the goal of this article. Fox But we’ll get back to that. In the meantime, let’s look at how much faith 21st Century Fox, of which Fox “News” Network is just a part, has in the truthfulness of the talking heads it’s hired.

The blockquote underneath is a waiver you’ll be forced to sign if you’d like to buy time on a Fox “News” slot, as provided by the Fox “News” Network LLC Terms of Use Agreement.

Company makes no representation or warranty whatsoever regarding the completeness, accuracy, currency or adequacy of any information, facts, views, opinions, statements or recommendations contained on the Company Services and/or the Content.

Unbelievable!

A little background about the channel itself seems in order. Fox “News” was created by Australian-born American media mogul Rupert Murdoch, who launched it on October 7, 1996 to 17 million cable subscribers. It has gained in power and reach since that time tremendously, and its brazenness has grown beside it twice as fast, a mutated golem made of mis- and dis- information.

The word “disinformation” comes from the Russian “dezinformatsiya”, meaning ” false information given to deliberately deceive”, and so we mostly think of it as something Russian. Certainly, to say the least, disinformation strategies of the type Russia used to interfere in our 2016 presidential election cycle have become a problem in today’s world. But the Russians are hardly the true masters.

Here in the United States of America, we also know a thing or two about getting lied to by our president. We know too that his primary way of doing it has become his own personal, privatized version of State TV- Fox “News”.

What Fox has done over the years, or even just during the election, dwarfs what the Russians did to the point of demonstrating their accomplishment as puny. The Kremlin got a few ads through to people on Facebook and held a few rallies; definitely creepy, but absolutely nothing compared to what domestic mouthpieces are capable of. Russia was able to goad an enormous bull, not become one.

Compared to what Fox is capable of, they’re nothing. Small-time pikers, and no mistake. You don’t have to take our word for it, either. Consider rather the words of Ralph Peters, a former Fox News strategic analyst and a retired lieutenant colonel in the United States Army who left the network last year in March, disgusted with its sycophantic coverage of Trump and the vicious rhetoric of its talking prime time heads.

Peters said specifically that he could not “in good conscience” remain with an organization that, he argued, “is now wittingly harming our system of government for profit.”

He went on letting them have it, too.

“In my view, Fox has degenerated from providing a legitimate and much-needed outlet for conservative voices to a mere propaganda machine for a destructive and ethically ruinous administration,” Colonel Peters wrote in his message, a copy of which was obtained by The New York Times.

As a people, we’ve gotten so used to being lied to by Fox that even the most acutely aware of the problem tends to have to shrug their shoulders at this point. But 99% of the slander thrown at Hillary Clinton in 2016 came from that direction. Varying aspects of what we know as the conservative media machine cooked it up over a quarter of a century, which illustrates and highlights the crux of the problem. Here in the land of the free, one of the most double-edged swords there is free speech.

Free speech is why I can write these words without having to fear death or the concentration camp. But it is also why we must tolerate Fox “News”, the Republican mouthpiece, lacking in all credulity- and yet, something I would still fight for their right to do just as hard as I would my own. In a democratic society such as ours, we have no choice but to grin and bear it. . Nothing true or useful comes to the people by way of it. It’s actually the polar opposite of news, which is daily information given by professionals, intending to inform the people about current events. Fox’s intent is to waylay and confuse.

What we, as a nation, have gotten used to accepting as a valid source is really one of the most wicked and egregious disinformation campaigns to take place in all of human history! It has not been by any foreign power that this disinformation has been unleashed on our people, but on our very own television sets, playing twenty-four hours a day nationwide. People are used to it, so they accept it as credible.

Nothing could be more inaccurate.

Fox "News" is NOT a news channel. It's an entertainment channel, like everything else on cable. Cable news is never news at all.
Fox “News” is NOT a news channel. It’s an entertainment channel, like everything else on cable. Cable news is never news at all.

When world leaders, be they figure of states or high-profile figures from civil society, deliberately employ untruth against their own people, they are without a doubt using a method of repression, and a very costly one at that. In the Donald Trump era, weaponized lying has become easier and more common than ever before. Fox News has become his primary mouthpiece.

This is a disaster for America because such a state of affairs cannot help the inflicting of large-scale corrosion of democracy, regardless of the state it’s taking place in. If a country values its democratic system, its citizens will have to find ways to ward off this threat from time to time.

Otherwise, it will not survive.

I can hear someone asking, off in a parallel universe perhaps, what’s the harm in it? Let them have their pleasant delusions if it helps to keep them at work. Is this really something we have to fear will badly wound America?

That is why James Madison wrote the Federalist Paper 10th.

A stupid and incompetent citizenry is something no nation will long survive, so you better believe it will badly wound America. It already has. Fox News disinformation ends breaking up families, making people permanently angry, and seeing to it they’re uneducated on as many subjects as possible.

Rolling Stone Magazine provides the following sad anecdote to illustrate the tendency’s nature.

Jen Senko believes that her father was brainwashed. As Senko, a New York filmmaker, tells it, her father was a “nonpolitical Democrat.” But then he transferred to a new job that required a long commute and began listening to conservative radio host Bob Grant during the drive. Eventually, he was holing himself up for three hours every day in the family kitchen, mainlining Rush Limbaugh and, during commercials, Fox News.

“It reminded me of the movie Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” Senko says. “He used to love talking to different people to try to learn their language, but then he became angry about illegal immigrants coming to the country, that they were taking jobs from Americans, and that English was becoming the secondary language.”

Studies have proven an actual physical effect of this by studying the brains of Fox News viewers. Author Daniel Goleman has coined the term “amygdala hijacking” to describe what inflammatory rhetoric and imagery are designed to do: trigger the emotional brain before the logical brain has a chance to stop it. The anger centers of their brains are literally more physically developed than those of healthy people. It’s like benchpresses for a bad temper.

In the year 2000, hosts like Hannity and the now-disgraced and silent Bill O’ Reilly made themselves the champions of the second Bush regime. This made them some friends. They learned a big lesson from it, too, one they’ve been revving up the engine off of ever since.

Misleading your viewers and using base anger to fight with is a quick and easy way to gain support from embittered people-whose numbers grow larger with every war and crisis. Divide and conquer is the oldest trick in the book used by the rich by preying on their fellows, in or out of America.

After 9/11 took place, while all the world was mourning and gearing up for war, Fox was making bigger and bigger bank as a result of their conservative alliance. They experienced a 440% increase in viewers, blowing the doors off comparable news organizations like CNN who don’t use wild speculations and click-bait headlines.

They got so big so fast, in fact, that when now-disgraced former CEO Roger Ailes came right out and said they are not a news organization in 2007, nobody much really heard him. They were too busy listening to Bill O’ Reilly and Sean Hannity instead. Hannity is a particular problem these days, as Trump’s good buddy, people give a lot of undue credibility to the lies told by him- a cable network entertainer, not a journalist.

Why are Big Three news networks like CBS or NBC or CNN so constrained by the truth while Fox is not? Surely the mighty Federal Communications Commission should be able to call Fox News to command, so why doesn’t it?

Actually, though, the FCC has no power over Fox or CNN, because both are cable shows and ultimately designed for entertainment! This is key. The difference between Fox and CNN is ideological. One chooses willingly to use journalistic standards. The other does not. Neither one is forced to! Fox is not legally obliged to tell the truth on the air.

Fox isn’t subject to FCC airwave regulation because it isn’t on the airwaves! Clever, right? Now they can spout all the hideousness they want and still dare to label it the truth. CNN is truthful by choice, but people think it’s because they have to be. That is not true, and it is almost certainly why the FCC doesn’t chop Hannity’s head off.

They nearly destroyed Howard Stern just for being annoying.

Make sure to catch that last part. Fox, the so-called “News” Network is in no way legally obligated to tell the truth about anything! They are a feature offered by the entertainment company 21st Century Fox. Entertainment is allowed to lie! It’s all just part of the show.

Making them tell the truth would spoil the effect, and our system doesn’t force them to. Not any more than USA’s client the World Wrestling Entertainment has to come right out and say pro wrestling is fake. People know it in their hearts, but they want to believe in the wrestlers, so they do. They like a good show. It’s exactly the same with Fox.

Although it should have been, it is not true that Fox has been made to start using a disclaimer saying “For Entertainment Purposes Only”. That was an April Fool’s joke in 2017 circulated by reporters, designed to make readers laugh- and to make them think. But it’s definitely true that entertainment is how they think of themselves. Ailes told The Hollywood Reporter in 2015 that he does not consider the other basic cable news channels — CNN and MSNBC — to be Fox’s competitors.

“We’re competing with TNT and USA and ESPN,” he said.

Discussion about American political issues today-meaning every single facet of life in southern North America- means a debate, unless you’re in a room where everyone agrees with you. Those debates will see a Fox-trained cadre putting forth the opinions of trolls like Hannity as a valid counterpoint to anything, even proven scientific facts. People take him seriously and believe the things he says.

Recently he said the immigration deal we nearly came to with Trump a “Garbage Compromise”. But actually, Hannity himself is an absolute, complete, and total trash can. He didn’t even go to school for this, he was working as a housing contractor when he randomly volunteered for radio and offered himself out as a mouthpiece for rightist nonsense.

If you’re willing to lie without repentance, there’s always some monopoly capitalist hoping to bring down America with your help.

Hannity has paid off for them with some real whoppers over the years. The anti-Obama movement of birtherism, 2016 voter fraud, “deep state opposition” of a “Shadow Government” – a network of government officials that are working to hinder the Trump administration. Conspiracy theories about the Seth Rich murder, and so on, leading up to the biggest lie of all- that Debauched Donald was fit to run this country.

It’s all a big show, not truthful news, but then again it was not meant to be. As the Fox “News” Network’s own CEO Roger Ailes said, they’re really competing with football and pro wrestling. It’s all for ratings and money- money that comes from billionaire libertarians like the Koch Brothers and their founder Rupert Murdoch.

Hannity will say whatever the Murdochs want him to.

That’s a big problem when most of it is not true; a third at most of Hannity’s public statements were rated fully true by Politifact. A recent Fairleigh Dickinson PublicMind Poll revealed that most Americans get their political knowledge from Sunday morning political shows on television. These “do the most to help people learn about current events.” That would seem to confirm their opinion.

However, listen to the rest of the story.

“[S]ome outlets, especially Fox News, lead people to be even less informed than those who don’t watch any news at all.”

Likewise, a University of Maryland study done in 2003 showed that Fox News viewers are more likely than consumers of any other news source to believe demonstrably false statements.

Again, this is because Fox is not a news channel. It’s entertainment packaged as news to mislead and stultify the American people. Great misunderstanding and bitterness come from believing things that just aren’t true. Real consequences arise from surrendering our objectivity.

Fox viewers have been getting angrier and angrier for decades, their bitterness manufactured and exploited. And who do their Friends at Fox lead them into feeling bitter towards? Liberals, progressives, anyone who wants to help the people. Anyone who isn’t just like them.

A full 60% of Fox News viewers describe themselves as conservative according to a 2012 survey by the Pew Research Center. According to John Ray at Data for Progress, “Across a variety of political and cultural attitudes, Republicans who report getting their news from Fox are significantly to the right of Republicans who don’t.”

Studies galore have been done to measure these tendencies, which should be well-documented and understood. Every one of the organizations reaching these conclusions is similar to MediaFactChect, a neutral nonprofit organization that exists to classify and track partisan bias levels among political media entities. They do this according to a rated standard political spectrum, going as always from extreme-left to extreme-right.

A related group, PunditFact, measures their commentators’ honesty. These standards are both logical and apolitical, and can reasonably trusted as far as anything else in the written world can.

Fox News is given by MediaFactCheck a Bias Rating very near the extreme end of the pole as Strongly Right, for reasons that are really rather damning. We’ve included them in blockquote below.

These media sources are moderately to strongly biased toward conservative causes through story selection and/or political affiliation. They may utilize strong loaded words (wording that attempts to influence an audience by using appeal to emotion or stereotypes), publish misleading reports and omit reporting of information that may damage conservative causes. Some sources in this category may be untrustworthy. See all Right Bias sources.

  • Overall, we rate Fox News strongly Right-Biased due to wording and story selection that favors the right and Mixed factually based on poor sourcing and the spreading of conspiracy theories that later must be retracted after being widely shared.

They also score badly by the standards of PunditFact, a second and related organization’s tool for measuring the percentage of truthful reporting done by political analysts on the stories they discuss and the terms they use to describe them. We decided to include the numerical figures below, as a stark quality comparison between the center and far-right journalists is to be found there.

Currently, at Fox and Fox News Channel, 58 percent of fact claims made by pundits and on-air personalities have been rated Mostly False, False or Pants on Fire. NBC and MSNBC were not great either, but their work still represents a significant improvement versus Fox at 45%.

CNN scored best with only 22 percent of their fact claims not making it through the filters and most of those coming from guests rather than commentators, which is interesting because CNN also is a cable network. They chose to use journalistic standards of their own volition, not because they were forced to by any mean laws or regulations.

Conversely, Don Irvine over at Accuracy in Media showed what Fox thinks of truth as a value.

Fox News Chairman and CEO Roger Ailes told The Hollywood Reporter that Fox News has become so big, the network is really competing with cable sports and entertainment networks like TNT, USA and ESPN, not the ratings-challenged CNN and MSNBC.

They laugh because it doesn’t get the ratings that come from anger and savage lying. It also doesn’t get big bucks from the likes of Charles and David Koch.
We have to keep hitting this point until it sinks in. Fox cannot be trusted, and we should immediately go on the attack whenever someone cites them as a source rather than arguing on the merits or flaws of their absurd claims. Fox is not a news network at all. It’s just an entertainment cable network, like TNT or USA. They do not have a record of journalistic integrity, and they do not have to have one. We must attack Fox credibility on these grounds.
On a cable network, or elsewhere, journalistic standards are a choice. Citizens have to know there is a big difference between the quality of the work of those who adhere to them and those who do not. Fox has made its choice long ago, and so we must make ours. We have to start hammering this home immediately. As fast as we can. Fox is LITERALLY-and legally- fake news. They have systematically and for decades mangled truth in the pursuit of power and money.
We are done listening.
All the filth and lies the Bernie supporters were slinging around in 2016 came through their pipeline.  They laid the groundwork in the minds of the American people that made them accept the Russian disinformation that convinced Bernie supporters to riot in the Philadelphia streets.
Most of all, they convinced the American people that Donald Trump, a known con man, racist, and bully, was worth entrusting the greatest responsibility in the world. They have put our entire American system at risk. The last pillar in the world holding democracy up
The nonsense the Russians were using was the same old anti-Clinton stuff Rush Limbaugh and his pals have been spouting. The record is clear and the facts are too.

In Trump’s words during the first 2016 presidential debates, somebody better call Sean Hannity.

To The Strongest- Nancy Pelosi For Speaker!

#TeamPelosi

The Blue Wave hit the nation hard last week, and it was beautiful. The number of seats we recaptured continues to grow and numbers in the hundreds, and that means we have made it. America is going to be all right so long as we are careful to properly utilize the resources of the House of Representatives.

In order to do that, we need our strongest master sitting behind the chessboard as the Speaker of the House. That master is Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco, current Minority Speaker of the House, who with Chuck Schumer has led Democratic resistance to Donald Trump since the day he won the election.

Pelosi is one of the toughest, smartest Americans to have ever drawn breath, and we need her. No way are we going to let radicals shout her off the board, and in talking for a minute about why it is so critical that she get her old job back as Speaker, the chess analogy continues to be useful.

The concept of the Fortress, in chess, refers to a situation in which the two sides competing are not materially equal, and one is much stronger than the other. However, even so, the weaker side can hold, having just enough material to keep from being checkmated. In this way, a drawn position can be achieved.

The Fortress is the position that Democrats have been playing for, and all that we have suffered and endured through since two Novembers ago has been for the sake of achieving it.

The point is that the Republicans are still stronger in terms of the power they hold. They have the higher house of the legislature, they have the White House, they have a Supreme Court majority.

But it doesn’t matter.

So long as Democrats hold the House, the Trump administration can do nothing. We can obstruct them every time they try and do something awful, like murdering tens of millions of people by depriving them of their basic right to health care. Republicans used to do this to Obama as a routine. They were routinely and accurately described as obstructionists.

Any law that gets passed in America must necessarily pass through both houses of the Congress. That is what a bicameral legislature means. The purpose of having one has been illustrated so vividly these past two years that it’s almost redundant to say so, but there it is.

They can’t get a law through without the House, which we control. We’ve got the power to save our country because of it.

Having said all this, it ought to be abundantly clear how important it is to use this power wisely.

The question of who ought to be the Speaker of the House is therefore not a question at all. And no one is asking it, save a few extremist agitators among the far left who are never satisfied with anything. The answer is Nancy Pelosi, just as it has been for the last two decades.

The praises of Pelosi are easy to sing. In the first two years of Obama’s presidency, she brought to the table the $840 billion stimulus package, the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), the Dodd-Frank banking reform bill, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, and the Waxman-Markey climate bill. All four of them passed, and we didn’t have a full Congressional majority for nearly half of that time.

Mistreatment of Pelosi by the far left, in particular, is despicable. To Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez– Biting the hand that feeds is the behavior of a spoiled child, whether or not that child happens to be a Representative. This person has been one of our most dedicated and historical leaders. Please stop and think about what you are doing. You really are getting in your own way with this kind of thing.

Pelosi is one of the most skillful political tacticians in America. She got her degree in political science back in 1961. She and Chuck Schumer even had good luck for a while, talking sense into Trump on the DACA deal, until Sean Hannity was allowed to overrule them.

Whosoever wants to throw away that kind of skill and professionalism at the exact time when the country needs it most is, to put it mildly, lacking a thorough knowledge of the subject.

She has a talent for organizing a caucus that is without equal. “You build your consensus in your caucus, and when you’re ready, you set the date to bring it to the floor,” she has explained, drawing a contrast between Democrats and Republicans. “This isn’t something where we ever go in and say: here’s the bill, now we need you to vote for it the day after tomorrow. That isn’t the Democratic Party. Some people criticize us for being such a Democratic Party, but that’s who we are.”

Building up that consensus is the part of the handiwork that the public doesn’t see. Only a few can manage it, and none without decades of experience. So one last time, we’re going to the chessboard for a hint of understanding, in talking about the need for cohesion of force.

Your army cannot communicate if a strong king is not present; and, in this case, that king happens to be a queen. Get behind her! It is what the country needs. That is the only thing that matters. As Alexander the Great said on his deathbed in referring to the inheritance of his empire, “To the strongest”!

We are Democrats. We stick up for our friends, and we stick up for those who have helped us! Attacking your own side is good for no one but your opponents.

We need Nancy Pelosi. We are very proud of her. And we will never give her up.

Stand Up for Nancy Pelosi! Dedicated Democrat, National Treasure.

Stand up for those who have stood up for you.

Nancy Pelosi is a hero. Plain and simple. There is simply no other way to say it.

This person has stood firm for us for years. That is why she has been the target of the Republicans, for years.

This Millennial Democrats contributor happens to remember that Bill O’Reilly was on the radio the night of Obama’s victory in 2008 calling her “dangerous”.

This is why National Review, Breitbart, and Townhall have got Google locked down this morning when you type in her name.

The treatment of Nancy Pelosi as of late by the far left, in particular, is despicable. It is the opinion of Millennial Democrats that to bite the hand that feeds is the behavior of a spoiled child. This person has been one of our most dedicated and historical leaders.

What is driving this need to savage one of our most gifted and able leaders? It certainly isn’t any fault of hers. Pelosi is one of the most skillful political tacticians in America.

She and Chuck Schumer even had good luck for a while, talking sense into Trump on the DACA deal, until Sean Hannity was allowed to overrule them.

In 2005, when becoming House Speaker was still a hope rather than a reality, Pelosi played a central role in destroying efforts by George W. Bush to try partially privatizing Social Security. When fellow Democrats asked her when she might release a competing plan of her own, her reliable answer, according to one aide, was, “Never. Does never work for you?” It worked. Bush’s effort was a fiasco.

But it wasn’t until Pelosi became Speaker of the House and had the support of a Democratic White House that the conditions arose for her to truly become a legend.

The Atlantic’s Andy Kroll wrote that “Pelosi muscled through one major piece of legislation after another: the $840 billion stimulus package, the Affordable Care Act, the Dodd-Frank banking-reform bill, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, and the Waxman-Markey climate bill.”

She has a talent for organizing a cohesive caucus that is without equal.

Only few can manage it, and none without decades of experience.

Nancy Pelosi got her degree in political science back in 1961. Whosoever wants to throw away that kind of skill and professionalism at the exact time when the country needs it most is, to put it mildly, lacking a thorough knowledge of the subject.

It has become a cliche to try and distance oneself from her or to say some crap about how she’s got “baggage”. This is what you call cowardice. It’s indecent. Period. It joins the Republicans and the loony left extremists in slinging filth at someone who doesn’t deserve it.

Republicans will be running nasty campaign ads linking Democratic candidates to Nancy Pelosi, whether or not she is still Speaker. That’s what they do. Long after she’s retired, that will be a dirty trick they use.

So stop falling for it! Stick up for your friends! Stick up for those who have helped you! Attacking your own side is good for no one but your opponents.

Nancy Pelosi has led Democratic resistance to Donald Trump since the day he won the election.

We are very proud of her.

And we will never give her up.

First They Came For The Dreamers.

Resist the wall.

On the issue of immigration, America has been brought to a truly sickening pass by its chief executive.

Construction started on a California section of Trump’s border wall on Wednesday.

This time, we have got to get good and mad. If we acquiesce to Trump building that wall, it will be a stain on the country’s honour that no amount of centuries can wash clean.

Ultimately we will do whatever is necessary to save our friends and loved ones, and Trump knows that.

But what’s to stop him from pulling this again? What’s to stop him from grabbing any number of us, and holding our needs hostage to use against us later? DACA represents an obvious way to hijack us, but it’s not like there aren’t others; sooner or later, there’s something we all don’t want to lose.

Appeasement never works. Never. All throughout history, the only way to stop a bully from picking on you has been to knock his block off.

Never give Poland to Hitler, as the saying goes. Something has to come along and stop this.

Our leaders have done all they can and achieved remarkable successes, but past a certain point they have no power. We’re not in control of a single one of the halls of government currently.

Now that President Obama has been out of office a year, we’re going to start feeling the results of Trump’s new policy real soon.

To pay for this waste of a wall, there will be no end to new regulations, state and local increases, etc. It’s going to be a gigantic and constant defiling for everyone who’s not a billionaire.

It all comes back to how we take it. There is a point past which they cannot function. If all of us steadfastly refuse to participate, business as usual cannot possibly continue.

One is reminded of the Robert Frost poem beginning “Something there is that does not love a wall,” as he then goes on trying to convince his neighbor not to rebuild one on their property line.

If you truly want to make America great again, you don’t build a wall that symbolizes everything that America shouldn’t be and has always stood up against.

The Wall is an eyesore. Forget about what a waste of money it is, walls as fortifications haven’t done much good since the development of modern artillery.

Wall or no wall, there’s no keeping watch over 1300 miles of borderlands to keep people who are desperate to get here out.

These big nationalist types talk about making America great again by kicking out all the Americans who came from Mexico. But they’re also the ones hiring them on the sly to save money. If Trump really wanted illegal immigration to stop, he’d crack down on these big employers.

Last week around this time, the Senate rejected a bipartisan plan to save our Dreamers, even at the cost of conceding to the wall. Republican leaders joined the White House, intentionally blowing the likeliest chance for immigration legislation this election year. Nice work.

The White House threatened to veto the measure, which underscored the issue and emphasized what a hot button the issue has become, for both parties. The profound lack of partisan compromise remained as intractable as it’s been for years.

Even the focus on Dreamers, who polls show win wide public support, was not enough to overcome opposition by hard-line conservatives and far-left Democratic presidential hopefuls afraid of angering the voters they’ll soon be begging.

In the meantime, Customs and Border Protection is replacing a little more than 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) in downtown Calexico, a sliver of the president’s plan for a “big, beautiful wall” with Mexico.

We are down to the line, folks. The long game of the opposition is becoming clearer by the day. The outline of a plot to reverse the entire trend begun by the civil rights outline is taking form as the dust settles.

If the people of this country go back to sleep this time, if we quietly sit back and allow Trump to be normalized, we will never get up again. It will not matter that we aren’t in favor of the awful things they’re doing because we will not have any power with which to stop it.

It is the opinion of Millennial Democrats that we’ve got a year or two at most to turn this thing around. We will do this using the same means we’ve been using all along. Raising public awareness to expose and reveal these people for who they are and what they are doing. Hope is not lost, but it’s going to take a lot of hard work on the part of us all. Please join your strength with ours. Help us fix this. Before it is forever too late.

Never Give Poland To Hitler! Schumer Rejects Trump’s Immigration Plan.

Trumpolini

Democrats have roundly rejected Donald Trump’s callous new immigration plan, on the grounds of common sense and principle. As if we were all at a gigantic auto meet, he plans to pressure us to swap the future of our DACA recipients, or Dreamers, for that stupid wall of his.

Trump told Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer(D-NY) the following- If there is no wall, there is no DACA. Unbelieveable.

This is America. We don’t ruin and discard hundreds of thousands of lives, over a pile of bricks and cement, in America. These are people. Not baseball cards.

The Cambridge English Dictionary defines the word “callous” as describing someone who is unkind, cruel, and without sympathy or feeling for other people.

Trump’s new immigration scheme is an excellent working example.

Since it’s Trump, the tendency is to want to avoid shock and revulsion at a story like this, having been shocked thus so many times before, but it simply isn’t possible.

When did Trump voters become so afraid? What is it that has scared them so? These rhetorical questions point the way to a dead and sordid end.

At any rate, Democrats have flatly rejected the whole repugnant concept. Looks like we’re headed for another shutdown.

Although the plan did provide a quick fix security option for Dreamers, it would have done so at a cost of tremendous damage to the immigration system.

The deal was to provide a 10-12 year pathway to citizenship for the 700,000 Dreamers already registered in the program, plus roughly another million undocumented young people in similar straits.

In exchange, Trump’s White House expects Democrats, and pro-reform Republicans, to accede to proposals that will cut even legal immigration by an estimated 50 percent. Particularly, it will be limiting the flow of non-white immigrants.

It will also squander $25 billion on the wall.

That’s a lot of extra taxes, but the Trump voters don’t seem to understand. It’s like they still think Mexico is footing the bill.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi summed up the plan simply as “anti-immigrant.”

Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said Trump’s plan would institute Trump’s “hard-line immigration agenda on the backs of these young people.”

“President Trump and Republicans cannot be allowed to use Dreamers as a bargaining chip for their wish list of anti-immigrant policies,” said Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.).

As tempting as it is to give in to this, to protect our friends and our family, it would empower and embolden Trump immensely. The Wall was a signature campaign promise, and news of that $25 billion would have proved to his base once and for all that he’s their man- and many others too, most likely.

After that, they’ll be twice as greedy and twice as aggressive. We have no choice but to stymie them with steadfast resistance. This is the only logical way to proceed.

Trump would not stop with this, of course, even if we did give in. Tyrants never do.

Appeasement is a dirty word for a reason.

It means giving in to brutal dictators, meekly giving in to bullying force.

Above all, it casts the image of the 1938 Munich agreement, where the British prime minister Neville Chamberlain feebly gave in to the outrageous demands of Adolf Hitler, agreeing to allow the violent annexation of Sudeten Czechoslovakia without protest.

Hitler had promised Chamberlain that this would be the last of his territorial demands in Europe but still attacked Poland just under a year later, destroying Chamberlain’s reputation and beginning World War Two.

Never give Poland to Hitler.

Going forward, we are going to be raising awareness about what this plan actually consists of. We’re not going to accede to Trump’s insane demands. But we also have to make it clear why we said no.

Trump wants to use this proposed path to citizenship for young undocumented immigrants as an excuse to devastate the legal immigration system. This cannot be allowed.

“This plan flies in the face of what most Americans believe,” Schumer said on Twitter. While Trump “finally acknowledged that the Dreamers should be allowed to stay here and become citizens, he uses them as a tool to tear apart our legal immigration system and adopt the wish list that anti-immigration hard-liners have advocated for years.”

Schumer’s decision marks the strategic direction of the Democratic opposition.

We are not going to accede to any deal that’s going to hurt the country in the long run, and it’s really sad that our own President would put us in this position. It is sadder still that he sees nothing of value in all these people than a bargaining chip in political negotiations.

We have to find a way forward on immigration that will not come back to haunt us in the future.

Water from the Rock- Dems Gain Toehold With Shutdown.

Dems win.

Democratic leadership in the Senate has managed to draw water from the rock. The weekend-long filibuster that shut down the government succeeded in extracting concessions on the immigration issue from a hostile majority party and insane White House.

The Senate vote to reopen the government was finally confirmed after it became clear Democrats were going to continue to block the spending bill over what do about young people affected by DACA until Republicans agreed to grow a soul.

The Republicans did not intend to compromise at all on this issue, and right now they hold all the cards. But ultimately, they did.

That is a measure of victory.

A government shutdown is not a joke.

The last shutdown happened in 2013 and lasted 16 days.

Nearly 800,000 federal employees were out of work without pay.

More than a million other working employees had their paychecks delayed.

According to estimates by the financial services company Standards & Poor’s, the last government shutdown cost America $24 billion, or $1.5 billion a day.

Democrats forced the shutdown with a heavy heart. We demanded a vote on legislation to protect Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients from deportation after Trump unexpectedly cancelled the program. The final agreement involved a vote on the issue by February.

GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina appeared alongside GOP Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Jeff Flake of Arizona, and made the following statement. “Here’s what I predict. Once we start talking about immigration and voting on immigration, we’ll find 60 votes to make sure these DACA recipients’ lives are not ruined by March 5.”

Critically, we were also able to secure funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program(CHIP). Monday’s deal to end the shutdown included a six-year reauthorization of the program, which will go on without any children losing their health insurance.

Still, it’s important not to try and cast a light on this whole incident as a win for us. It wasn’t. There was never any path to a victory here.

On Monday, a senior Republican aide told CNN that McConnell wasn’t planning to provide any firmer commitment on immigration than he already has.
“If that’s not enough for Democrats, then we’re in this for the long haul,” the aide added.
That leaves us with a hard road ahead.
It’s like the old Steinbeck book, In Dubious Battle. Sometimes you have to fight, even when you know you’re going to lose. And that’s what we just did. We took a stand. Many of our guys are up for re-election next year, in states that Trump won by a lot. It took a lot of courage.
Progressive holdouts are shrieking bloody murder, of course, but that was going to happen no matter what.
It’s a noble struggle that was just undertaken, actually. And the ones who kept on holding out were risking nothing in so doing; they’re not up for reelection this year. They’re just posing as presidential candidates.
There’s no doubt they’re doing all they can to make our lives difficult, and it’s becoming harder to hold the center because of them.
Here’s the thing, though- All of them are lemmings. The only thing that has stopped them from hurling themselves off a cliff so far is us. If we are not able to hold them back, they will all get rid of themselves. History has already proven this. George McGovern, the Bernie Sanders of his day, was slaughtered so thoroughly by Richard Nixon that his entire electoral concept- as visualized by him- was essentially refuted on the spot.
In the real world, adults who want to make actual progress have to be realistic. Sometimes compromises with people we’d rather not deal with are necessary.

Our Democratic leadership put their own necks on the chopping block and shut down the government for the sake of our Dreamers. They are now being raked over the coals from both angles, and that is just lousy.

They are national treasures, and we are very proud of them.

Going forward, we’ve got to raise awareness of how much we actually accomplished given the circumstances.

Democratic activist Sheila Jones wrote to us on the subject.

“The issue will not now be debated only behind closed doors in Congress. It will be decided in the public forum, and 87% of the public is for DACA. So we can wipe the floor with them.”

We’ve got to stick up for Chuck Schumer. And we’ve got to prepare ourselves to fight this whole battle again, in three weeks. See you in the trenches.

Two Minutes To Midnight- A Looming Shutdown.

Two Minutes To Midnight

Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, the Democratic Senate Minority leader, wrapped up a closed-door meeting with Trump at the White House, as these words were being written.

Trump, the self-billed master negotiator, would not make a deal to avert a shutdown. Or to spare the misery of uncertainty to 200,000 recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals(DACA) program.

Schumer told reporters outside the Capitol: “We had a long and detailed meeting. We discussed all of the major outstanding issues. We made some progress, but we still have a good number of disagreements. The discussions will continue.”

Every time this comes up, it’s enough to blow my mind. I just can’t believe it. Who cares where they were born. These are Americans. Millennials, mostly. People we went to school with. To have them all ripped out of our lives, and sent tumbling backward into a place they’ve never even been to, over a wall that would be good for nothing but a big mess and an eyesore?
Leaving all the rest aside, fixed fortifications never work. The Great Wall of China is the one human creation we can see from the moon. Neat. But did it save the Chinese when the Mongols came to conquer them? No! They just hopped right over it!
This as compared to the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea. Nobody crosses it. Ever. The zone is so free from human habitation that flora and fauna live there that can be found nowhere else on Earth. The will to keep people out is there and enforced with absolute rigor.
There’s also no wall.
Democrats and any other citizens of conscience have no choice here but to push for a solution for recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program and insist that it be addressed before the next deadline Friday evening. That is now about four hours away and counting- and it’s not clear whether the two parties will reach an agreement by then.
A senior White House official gave a rather miserable summary of the day’s meeting, confirming that a lengthy list of obstacles still remains. But he was eager to tell everyone it was “cordial”, i.e. Trump was wearing pants, and he did not hop up on his desk and defile the bipartisan proposal in the manner of a baboon.
That’s the progress Chuck Schumer was referring to.

So what does a government shutdown mean, and how would it affect our lives until it ended?

Every federally funded agency, program, and service will be classified “essential” or “non-essential”.

If you’re a government employee, depending on which category your agency falls into, you may not be going to work tomorrow. Worse yet, you may be going to work tomorrow without compensation.

The military is essential, of course. But if the government shuts down tomorrow, servicemen won’t receive money for their work until it reopens.

Agencies and departments who are classified nonessential, including agencies that pay out small business loans and process passport requests, will cease to work until Congress is able to agree on a bill for the federal budget. Their employees will be on furlough.

The last time the government went through a shutdown was in 2013. Afterwards, everyone who stayed home was paid retroactively after an agreement was reached in Washington, but this administration couldn’t be more different than the one running the show in 2013. Trump is mean and vindictive. He will seek to punish and destroy. He will do everything he can to deny those people payment, so he can turn around

In the Art of the Deal, Trump writes, “Go for the jugular so they won’t wan’t to mess with you.”

And that’s all this is really about. Going for the jugular. Viciousness and cruelty as a legitimate means of deterrence. It’s the political equivalent of a countersuit. The ghost of Roy Cohn must be gnashing its teeth in glee, down there in hell.

The one positive is that Robert Mueller’s investigation will continue unhampered. In every other way, this is very bad news.

My mind just keeps coming back to my friends.

One guy I know is really good at detailing cars. The very best.

Another man I know has had a kind word and a smile for me, every day I’ve known him. Some days I was really down, and it helped, just to have a human interaction, to be reminded that I wasn’t alone.

I would miss that man. Very much.

The situation is terrible, and the maniac in charge of it will not bend just out of spite. We can’t either. It’s impossible. Such a thing can never be.

It’s either stand up for our Dreamers or accept the end of every American value that has meaning.

As we proceed forward into these last few hours, it’s important to take stock of why this is happening- and to bear witness. Donald Trump, the Nero of our time, the tyrant and petty dictator who is gambling with the futures of 200,00 human beings, will be vilified by this for all eternity.

By glorious misdeed, he has made himself renowned. After this step, he will not turn back.

His frenzy, feeding on its own violence, with outrage ever fresh will mark his days.

But in the end, the people, sick and tired, will add his name to the list of his other victims. And in the days to come, his name will transform into a slight to cast at other wicked presidents.

The very name of Trump will be an insult.

The 25th Amendment- A Nuclear Moron and a Presidential Sanity Clause.

The 25th Amendment. Honestly, how many of us even knew what it was, twelve months ago? One person who didn’t is writing this article. But since then, a lot of things have changed.

What it is, is a type of political ripcord regarding the position of chief executive. A ripcord is what you pull to release a parachute, your last hope to not die if you’re in a plane that’s going to crash. Hopefully by now this metaphor requires no explanation. At any rate, the amendment allows for the removal of a President in the case of his being unfit to serve, for any reason.

Its purpose is to provide a failsafe, a legal mechanism outlining a process for the chief executive to be legally  stripped of power and removed from office. This would require a vote by 13 Cabinet members and the Vice-President. Basically, it means there is hope beyond Russiagate, for getting out of all of this alive and before 2020.

People have been talking about this for a while now, but lately it’s been catching a lot of attention. Bob Corker, Tennessee’s junior senator, recently said in a New York Times interview that the White House is like an adult daycare center and that Trump could lead the country into World War III.

That statement resonated in hearts worldwide. Bipartisan support has exploded for Corker, who joins a growing number of Congressional Republicans in deciding not to seek reelection. Since announcing his retirement, Corker has spoken his mind thoroughly about the large orange infant stinking up the White House. It’s too bad more of the Republicans won’t join him. Long-time columnist Frank Rich recently referred to it as “the disgrace of Republican silence“. Well said.

On Monday, CNN host Michael Smerconish said Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) is “planting seeds” to call into question President Trump’s fitness for office.

“I’m thinking of the 25th Amendment, Section Four, which speaks to a president who’s unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office,” Smerconish said on CNN.

Several White House officials on Wednesday denied an NBC News report, that Trump said we needed 10 times the nuclear weapons we currently possess. This increase in the nuclear arsenal was proposed during the heated meeting that ultimately led to Secretary of State Rex Tillerson referring to the President as a “moron.”

Of course they denied it. What else are they going to do? Just come stark, and flat out say it’s true? Yes, the Secretary of State has indeed told the truth, and called our President the moron a moron?

Speaking in the Oval Office on Wednesday, Trump called the nuclear moron report “fake news.”

“I never discussed it,” Trump said ahead of talks with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. “Right now we have so many nuclear weapons. I want them in perfect condition, perfect shape.”

“When they said I want 10 times what we have right now, it’s totally unnecessary, believe me,” Trump continued. “It’s got to be in tip-top shape.”

Trump denied a rift has developed between himself and Tillerson.

“We actually have a very good relationship,” he said, going on to concede that his views on North Korea do differ from those of his top diplomat.

“I think I have a little bit different attitude on North Korea than other people might have. And I listen to everybody,” he said. “But ultimately my attitude is the one that matters, isn’t it? That’s the way it works.”

Well, maybe not.

Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon has been telling people he thinks Trump has about a 30% chance of completing his four-year term.

Wednesday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” host Joe Scarborough urged Republican senators need to “take immediate action” to limit President Donald Trump’s “ability to launch nuclear weapons. Criticism of Trump from Morning Joe is far from unexpected, of course. What was unexpected, is that the article was done by Breitbart News.

The situation at the White House has only gotten worse since Bannon crunched his number. Trump’s moods have grown even darker. There is verification that the President wanted to up the US nuclear arsenal tenfold. It was this suggestion that prompted Tillerson to call the President a moron.

Earlier this month Trump publicly said Tillerson was wasting his time, trying to open talks with North Korea. It is the opinion of Millennial Democrats that no other sane option exists. Any military solution would cause the death of millions and involve nuclear weapons for a certainty. This is a no-brainer.

A sane and competent president would ask his secretary of state to try and start some talks with Kim. Nixon was not a big fan of North Vietnam; he dropped more bombs on it in his first week of reelection than all the bombs in World War Two combined. But he still sent Henry Kissinger to bargain with Le Duc Tho, Hanoi’s equivalent.

There is also the Iran issue. Trump is on the verge of scrapping the nuclear agreement we have with them, for reasons that remain unclear. Acting on such a concept would be inane beyond verbal description.

The downside would be that if we did back out of the deal, Iran would not give us our money back, and would start back up with their nuclear weapons program. The upside, at least in the mind of Trump, is that it would help him negate the legacy of Barack Obama. Robert Reich said in a letter to Rex Tillerson that Trump’s narcissism is endangering the world.

The last hope of the Republicans for getting something done with Donald Trump’s presidency is John Kelly, the retired Marine general serving as Trump’s second chief of staff. Kelly has managed to tighten up the flow of information and visitors to the president, bringing order to an unruly White House.

On days that Trump feels like taking orders from his betters, It all works like something resembling a viable White House. Increasingly often, however, he does not. Reports of screaming matches between the two have become increasingly common.

We’ve been here before, plenty of times. Trump melts down, others put him back together, and the lurching golem that is this abortive presidency slouches on for a few more miles. But we’re reaching the point of getting low on people to attend the repairs.

Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi were having good luck for a while, talking sense into him on the DACA deal, but Sean Hannity overruled them. Hannity pointed out that Trump’s base wants him tough on immigration. Trump went with Hannity.

So, on Sunday, Trump presented the Democrats with a list of demands that effectively scuttled the new bargain. It would have assured our Dreamers a path to legal citizenship, but that was not as important as appeasing his alt-right base. So here we are again. Mired in the mud and spinning our wheels.

The 45th president of America’s foolishness and incompetence will be legend throughout all of time. It will almost certainly lead to a career-ending blunder even if Robert Mueller does not have enough to bring charges.

If the Fates should prove cruel, and deny us justice with regard to an impeachment,we do have the 25th Amendment as a last hope to fall back on. If such a vote among the Cabinet ever does come to pass, Rex Tillerson, for one, has got to be inclined to cast his vote in the direction that gets rid of Trump. It’s the only rational choice.

How the GOP Grew Gangrenous- Jim Crow, Anarchy, and Immigration,Pt.3

It is a well-known fact that economic recessions give the forces of radicalism a shot in the arm. We have seen that as recently as 2016, as evinced by the popularity of both Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump. This is what made it so easy for Trump to knock aside and disregard the rank-and-file Republicans that have made our life a hell all these years.

We have also seen that the far right is the inevitable beneficiary of the consequences, when the far left loses control of themselves and does something stupid. The emails dumped by Wikileaks the day before the Democratic National Convention in 2016, that led to rioting in the streets and the forced resignation of Debbie Wassermann-Schultz illustrate a particularly grotesque example.

People don’t take it well, when they lose everything due to government incompetence. No one is as aware of that as people who came of age in the new millennium. If you grew up in the 1990’s, under the benign and prosperous reign of Bill Clinton, you just were not prepared, for the slaughterhouse reality of watching it all go to the dogs after 2001.

The turn of the millennium was a very hopeful time for our generation. We all grew up talking about it, watching movies about it, and dreaming of what the world would look like, when the big year finally came. The years just prior had been some of the best the country had ever seen.

The Soviet Union was gone, the Internet boom had created a whole new infinity of possible ways to spend your future, and the Stone Temple Pilots were actively touring. It is the opinion of Millennial Democrats that Purple was a superior album to Core.

When George W. Bush got together with Ralph Nader, and stole the 2000 election from Al Gore, he turned all that prosperity into an unjust war. Watching the country start resembling a garbage dump, when all indicators had pointed to a magnificent, futuristic era, was the most heartbreaking and disillusioning thing you could imagine.

It was the worst thing he ever could have done for the country. The resultant war, catastrophe, and repression has caused a terrible anger to start brewing in the hearts of our people. Failure to properly cope with that anger is why people voted for Trump.

It was the financial crisis known as the Great Recession that set the stage for the chaos we are living in now. In Teddy Roosevelt’s time, also, the stage was set by a terrible financial crisis. It was known as the Panic of 1893.

The Panic of 1893

Employee unions had become an increasingly ubiquitous force in American life, during the last quarter of the nineteenth century. They sought to improve working conditions, and their methods were not always nonviolent.

Strikers had clashed violently with police and the military, in many places nationwide. In Chicago’s Haymarket Riot in 1886, a bomb was thrown at police, and seven were hanged in the aftermath. The European “doctrine” known as anarchism had showed up on the scene. Its presence was unwanted and so were the immigrants that brought it. These tensions exacerbated the situation further. Communication started breaking down between the people and the government, which barely stayed open.

The year before the Panic, the Carnegie Steel Trust cut the wages of its workers at the Homestead Works near Pittsburgh, sparking one of the greatest labor battles of the day, and bringing the name of Emma Goldman, the revolutionary socialist, to the forefront of American politics for the first time.

Goldman’s circle devised a plan to assassinate the plant manager, Henry Clay Frick, and her husband Alexander Berkman actually tried it. The plan did not work, Berkman went to prison, and it ruined the strike for the strikers. The law had their excuse to suppress the workers, and Goldman was soon forced into exile. The pressure on the streets began approaching critical mass.

Anarchist Alexander Bergman attempts to assassinate Henry Clay Frick.

In 1901, President William McKinley was interacting with a crowd at the Pan-American Exhibition in Buffalo, New York, shaking hands with someone, when a 28-year-old anarchist named Leon Czolgosz ran up and shot him in the chest. He died eight days later, and Vice President Theodore Roosevelt was immediately sworn in as president.

The assassination of President William McKinley.

When the far-left lost their collective temper, it expressed itself in the shooting of the President. This event worsened their lot tremendously. The press associated the assassination with “crazed” anarchists in the public mind, costing it whatever public sympathy it had.

Political Cartoon
McKinley’s assassination reaps its dividends

The authorities used the assassination attempt as an excuse to arrest and imprison leftists of every stripe, radical or not. They will do it again anytime they have to. This is one of many reasons why we will always take a strong position against rioting and bedlam for any reason.

Whatever else is going on, Democrats remain lawful and nonviolent. We don’t poison our own waters with crap like this.

As a result of all this disorder, the immigration question suddenly took on a paramount importance. It was perceived in terms very similar to what we see today, although no one on our political scene back then was stupid enough to think this could be fixed by building a wall.

Image result for immigrants in the age of teddy roosevelt
The Melting Pot of America

Then as now, the nation was being challenged to find ways to accommodate a massive influx of immigrants. Most of these were from South America, Eastern Europe, and Middle Eastern countries such as Syria, areas which have traditionally been host to agricultural countries with dated political systems.

It was under these conditions that Teddy Roosevelt became the first president in office to explicitly link immigration with the security of the country, and put the immigration issue high on his political agenda. Although he considered immigrants to be a key building block of the nation’s success in the future, his predecessor had been murdered by one, and he never stopped considering them a threat.

TR’s immigration policy

TR suspected the public’s mood would darken in this direction, and he moved to take advantage of their outrage. Thanks to the excesses of anarchists, the executive branch was able to set the basic course of immigration debate and policy for decades to come, with the ultimate goal being for the federal government to gain the ability to pick and choose at the gate.

Our Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients have a unique perspective on this issue, and particular focus should be paid going forward on hearing their stories and receiving their input.

Under Republican guidance, the problem has gotten steadily worse, and the government responses more extreme. Most recently, the 45th President of the United States, Republican Donald Trump, ordered immigration checkpoints to remain open in Texas during the evacuation process from Hurricane Harvey.

Although Millennial Democrats opines that Theodore Roosevelt is rolling over in his grave, to see what today’s GOP has been doing with his ideas, the fact remains that he can legitimately be held responsible for setting in motion an immigration policy that revolved around a selection process that included stereotyping, racial profiling, and immigration.

TR’s views on race and people of color are repugnant by the standards of today. But it’s important to remember that he came to office at a time when racism was all-pervasive. Jim Crow laws had recently begun taking effect down South.

The famous scientist Sir Francis Galton coined the term “eugenics”, a set of beliefs and practices designed to improve the genetic quality of a human population. Eugenicists were universal in declaring for the inferiority of the black man. This theory remained popular until the Nazis applied it to its logical conclusions. These days, Republicans do not like to talk about it.

Although Galton himself ridiculed it, part of the so-called scientific racism eugenics evolved from included another “science” called phrenology, attempting to measure one’s intelligence, ability, and personal characteristics by the shape of one’s skull. The conclusions drawn by that pack of louts were, to say the least, ungenerous in their assessments of African- Americans.

But TR did not pay any of it much mind. The great Booker T. Washington served as his close adviser on racial relations, and at his invitation, became the first African-American to eat dinner in the White House. This was one of the things that inflamed the conservative wing of the Republican party against him, and this is of the highest significance.

In that inflammation, was the seed of the modern deplorable.

It was a very horrible time to be in America for anyone except white males, as we moved into the 20th century. These were free to murder a black man, or rape a black woman, with all but complete impunity in most of the nation. Discrimination against minorities and women was a part of the American bedrock, and perfectly legal, and this manifested in acts of murderous violence all the time. In 1915, a Jewish man named Leo Frank was dragged out of prison by a mob and lynched.

This event caused a great deal of controversy, so much so that two famous and familiar institutions were born and reborn from it- the Anti-Defamation League, and the Ku Klux Klan. The merest mention of the latter’s sickening name, let alone its history, should be enough to make anyone understand why we can’t equivocate when it comes to philosophies of hatred. When it comes time to call a foul abomination like Charlottesville by name, you have got to make a choice. Either you do, or you don’t. Inside that choice, lies the key to what manner of person you are.

Between racial issues and economics, the beginnings of the ideological schism in the Republican Party had become quite clear already. In 1908 TR decided not to run for a full second term, and went hunting in Africa instead. He came home displeased at the direction things were going, and opposed his former Secretary of War, William Howard Taft, in the 2012 primaries.

Taft used his control of the party machinery to gain a bare majority of delegates, and kept control of the nomination by dubious means. Roosevelt left the party at once, and formed the Progressive Party.

The remainder of the Republican Party was now to be solely comprised of the reactionary Conservative faction represented by Taft, his successor.  Here we find the nucleus of the Party of Hate that the GOP is today.

But the Democrats still had plenty of racists, too. It wasn’t to be until the decline of the conservative wing of the Democratic Party was complete after 1960 that we managed to mostly rid ourselves of this pernicious and unworthy influence.

Woodrow Wilson, who defeated both Taft and Roosevelt in 1916,  was a Democrat. He was also a Southerner, who did great harm to the cause of black people, far more than either Taft or Roosevelt would have. But with the two old friends now at each other’s throats in a third-party disaster, like what we have gone through with the Green Party, his victory in 1912 was a fait accompli.

The Republicans got beat that year, and their party split in two, because of their inability to come to terms and see eye to eye. The same thing happened to us on the left wing in 2000, and again in 2016. When decent people fail to work together, it is always the villains who profit.

World events were about to shake things up. The two World Wars were right around the corner, and they would prove capable of drawing many new boundaries, both geographical and ideological. For the Republican Party and the rest of the world, many changes were on the horizon.

Republican Rabies and Democrat Decency- Trump’s Base Hates Him!

Trump supporters are going berserk. The Democrats have managed to successfully appeal to Trump’s sense of mercy on the subject of the Dreamers. According to the nearly-finalized agreement, not only will there be no wall, but the DACA recipients will stay and get a legal path to citizenship. Ann Coulter is beside herself with rage, at the thought of it. Trump’s base now “hates him”, according to her. She went so far as to outright call for his impeachment.

Breitbart News also went rabid immediately, coining their old hero #AmnestyDon.  And Trump supporters have gathered in packs nationwide, to burn those stupid looking hats of his in protest of the one decent decision of his presidency.

The traditional base of the president have shown us that victory is nowhere near as important for them as being able to hold onto old misconceptions and illusions. Desperate for wins at any cost, Trump has perceived a lifeline before his eyes. He has happened across the one strategy guaranteed to pay off for him. By listening to us Democrats and helping us get our stuff done, he’ll score all the big victories he wants.

For Donald Trump, this has led to good things. For the first time since his presidency began, he is enjoying being hated less by the rest of America, the people not among his base, It is probable he will not give that up. This is very good news for America. But it is not good news for Trump’s base.

They want a return to the days of “Lock her up!” and “Build the wall!”. In the absence of these, politics is ceasing to be fun for them. What a shame.

Those “true Trump” voters –his most ardent supporters – comprised about 22 percent of registered voters in the poll. Their stance on issues like immigration and LGBT rights is far more ardent than their Republican brethren.

The Trump arm of the GOP has felt increasingly isolated, and left behind by the times they no longer understand. Many seem to be feeling acutely uncomfortable and overlooked with many of the changes of the past decade.

According to the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll,

“The Trump arm of the GOP looks almost like an entity unto itself, one that is feeling acutely uncomfortable with many of the changes of the past decade and overlooked by the news media,” the poll analysis notes. “The attitudes among True Trump voters raise questions about the Republican Party’s direction. The energy in the GOP right now is with them and the data do not suggest they are a group looking for compromise or moderation.”

While Donald Trump’s supporters remain far from united in opposing the goals of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, a new HuffPost/YouGov survey finds that those with anti-immigration views are united in a very firm bloc. They are ones who feel most strongly about the issue. Their stolid racism made them Trump’s core, the backers who propelled him to his victory in the primary over his more mainstream Republican rivals.

Monmouth University poll released earlier this year, reported that six in 10 people who approve of President Donald Trump (61%) say that there is nothing Trump could do that would lose him their backing.

The cultural divide running through American politics has long had an undercurrent of partisan distrust between it, but the gaps grow even wider when one looks at the group of voters firmly behind President Donald Trump. Their devotion to him is unbounded by decency or reason.

However, for all their love and adoration, for all that their undying goodwill put him into power, what Trump wants above all else is something he can never get from Trump voters- success.

Promising his base the things they think they want was successful. Following through on them, however, has proved an impossible disaster. The process of trying has made him the most reviled man on Earth, not to mention the most laughed at. And the Republican Congressmen he had planned to shoot for the stars with, were not able to put a repeal bill on his desk, let alone a replacement. The people who brought him to the dance have become a liability.

This is a president in desperate need of validation, affirmation, and success. Trump cares about winning more than he cares about anything else. The only wins of his presidency, were achieved for him through listening to Democrats and helping us actualize our plans.

Every indication suggests that Schumer and Pelosi had such an easy time handling him in regards to this most recent deal on the DACA program, because he wanted the same media members who he hates with such a passion to say pleasant things about him.

An outsider looking in would think it ludicrous. To suggest that a brand new president would feel the need to backtrack on a key campaign promise, alienate his core base, and grant a path to citizenship for the same 800,000 undocumented immigrants he was elected to deport, seems all but fantastical.  With Trump, however, it’s the simplest explanation- and therefore, probably the best one.

We got our fill of what True Trump voters call fun, after the Charlottesville tragedy that claimed the innocent life of our sister, Heather Heyer.  Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi’s unexpected initial success in getting Trump to sign off on a worthy plan has opened a door for a number of different policies.

Proposals which would otherwise never have been possible have been put on the president’s table by Democrats. Due to this, things are looking as good as they have, since before January 20. If the cost of this tendency continuing is the unhappiness of hardcore Trump supporters, it is the opinion of Millennial Democrats that we can afford it.
