Supreme Court Upholds Travel Ban, Ruptures American Dream.

And Justice For All.

The Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday that Donald Trump acted lawfully when he called for the US to begin a policy of banning anyone, most notably persons of Islamic faith, who live in a certain seven countries last year and has upheld his right to continue doing so.

It’s a dark day for democracy worldwide. So the Republicans are actively celebrating.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R) marked the Supreme Court ruling upholding President Trump’s travel ban by sharing a photo of himself with Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch.

McConnell’s campaign shared the image just minutes after the Supreme Court handed down its 5-4 ruling finding that the ban was constitutional. Gorsuch sided with the majority of justices upholding the ban.

Gorsuch is the guy Trump picked out to replace former Chief Justice Antonin Scalia after he died. He was brought in to rubber-stamp Trump’s decisions, and the whole Supreme Court has been corrupted because of it.

Scalia was a miserable excuse for a man who was against everything except the death penalty. Little kids in cages? Banning entire populations of countries from so much as visiting here? He’d have loved this.

This is why the Republicans were so desperate to block President Obama’s nominee, Merrick Garland.

This is not the first time the Supreme Court has been wrong. The Dred Scott case comes to mind. That very same court once ruled that it was acceptable to treat humans as cattle and that Africans were only 3/5 human.

The first Muslim elected to Congress, Keith Ellison, predicted on Tuesday that the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold President Donald Trump’s travel ban will end up in “the dustbin of history”, and this is almost certainly true.

During the interim, however, this is undoubtedly a tremendous win for both Trump and future holders of the executive branch of our government, and such a win could not have come at a worse time. It is certain to embolden both a man and a party who already have no respect whatsoever for the spirit of the law.

Fox anchor Abby Huntsman recently referred to Trump as a dictator, live and on the air, as he strolled around with his good buddy Kim Jong Un of North Korea, another guy who has no respect for human rights.

“I called both President Trump and Kim Jon Un a dictator”, Huntsman explained.

It’s Jong Un, ma’am, but we’re not going to quibble.

At the time, we had this to say about the aforementioned exchange:

The incompetence of the enemy is no longer funny, and in our opinion, it’s probably being done on purpose. The lady tried walking the statement back with an apology but the seed has been planted just the same. They’re sending subtle, almost subliminal cues, and if we listen carefully, we too can catch their meaning.

If Trump is a dictator, and Fox reports on it as being normal, then all of their viewers necessarily believe that they are now subjects and that democracy has fallen and they’re fine with it.

Several weeks ago, the senior United States Senator from Massachusetts, Elizabeth Warren, was asked by news host Rachel Maddow if she thinks America is still a country who respects the rule of law. Her response?

“I hope so.”

These words ring true with even greater solidity now that Trump’s anti-Muslim travel ban, which violates everything about the spirit of American law, has been confirmed by the Supreme Court.

Going forward, our focus will be the raising of awareness that Trump really is walking down an autocratic road, and that Trump and the Republicans have decided to make themselves into active enemies of the American dream.

In order to get people to realize it, we’ve got to make the case. We’ve got to gather and arrange the evidence and lay it on the American people’s doorstep. Republicans have dropped the ball by every conceivable metric. They have failed us at every turn. Let’s make sure they are properly credited.

Atrocity on the Border- Pentagon To Host 20,000 More Kids.

The agony continues for warehoused immigrant children.

The horrific saga of the biggest human rights crisis in recent American history has continued to play out all week, causing a tremendous dissonance and moral rupture in the country.

Public discovery of the Trump administration’s mass warehousing of immigrant children on the border has thrown a bomb into the consciousness of America. Pandemonium reigns from shore to shore.

The people responsible, however, do not seem to mind.

They certainly don’t seem to feel the least bit bad about it. Let alone accepting their own accountability, they are not even ready to admit they’ve done anything wrong. In fact, they’re just getting started. And they are about to double down.

Trump’s Department of Health and Human Services has now commanded the Pentagon to make preparations to house as many as 20,000 unaccompanied migrant children on American military bases, a United States official said.

In simpler language, that means plans to create new detention camps are being drawn. This isn’t getting better.

Jeff Sessions defiantly doubled down against the advice of his own pastor and personal congregation, saying that this will not end until Trump gets his wall.

He sanctimoniously quoted the Bible passage used by slaveholders back before the Civil War to justify their monstrous practice of treating their fellow humans as cattle.

Nikki Haley reviled the U.N. Human Rights Council without ceasing, decrying it as a “cesspool of political bias.”

If it’s a cesspool, Nikki, you and your lot ought to be very happy there. It’s where you belong, but the real cesspool, of course, is the warehouse they’ve been housing these kids in.

The confusion and humanitarian concerns unleashed by Trump’s policy cannot be adequately explained with language. These people have built a hell on earth for little children and are calling it a nursery school.

“We have high standards,” Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said, with no sense of her own absurdity. “We give them meals and we give them education and we give them medical care. There are videos, there are TVs.”

Those high standards she’s talking about-There is a piece of audio recorded from inside that godforsaken pit by ProPublica. Children are screaming. Without stopping.

It makes for some of the most horrible sounds of woe any person ever heard. The lamentations of all democracy were in their voices. This is a mark on our national honor that can never be undone.

Meanwhile, news from the border continues rolling in, bringing with it headlines that defy credulity.

“Torn from Immigrant Parents, 8-month-old Baby lands in Michigan”.

“Deputy Accused of Sexually Assaulting Girl, 4, threatening to have mother deported if she spoke up.”

“Immigrant Children Injected With Drugs”.

The latter piece began with the sentence “Trump’s zero-tolerance policy is creating a zombie army of children forcibly injected with medications”.

This is not a movie, nor the National Enquirer, nor some nutty Russian disinformation bot.

They really are using antipsychotics on little tiny kids.

Legal filings show immigrant children in U.S. custody subdued with psychiatric drugs. Hardcore ones, too, like olanzapine and ziprasidone, stuff with really heavy sedating properties and awful side effects.

This is the kind of thing that goes on in the darkest recesses of American prisons, according to the testimonials of writers like Jack Henry Abbott and George Jackson. We do this now to five-year-olds?

The president of the American Academy of Pediatrics told CNN the practice is “nothing less than government-sanctioned child abuse.”

The psychiatric community of America is all but unanimous in their conclusion that the incarcerated children are going to be shellshocked for life. Nadine Burke Harris of the Center for Youth Wellness referred to Trump’s policy as a “recipe for toxic stress.”

Post-traumatic stress is nothing nice. People end up on drugs, they have permanent abandonment issues, they can’t sleep, they get night terrors, etc.

Add to this a whacked-out neurochemistry caused by psychotropic tampering done to the person against their will, in early childhood, and you’ve got a deeply wounded human being. For what?

The crime of being an immigrant’s child, taken across the border by your parents.

This is repugnant far beyond anything else the already disgusting Trump administration has done so far, and although he did sign something meant to end the separation of families, the damage has already been done. These kids will never forget this, no matter what else happens in their life.

Raising awareness has always been our task at Millennial Democrats, but this time is on another level from the others. We’ve got to think of something that will get these kids out of that warehouse.

Thinking along those lines, Democrats nationwide announced that they would not wait for Congress to act. A coalition of 10 states filed a lawsuit aimed at making sure that the Trump administration does not continue to separate children from their parents at the border.

“President Trump yesterday signed an empty and meaningless order that claims to take back policies that he put in place himself as a political stunt,” said Xavier Becerra, the California attorney general, who is a plaintiff in the suit. “Meanwhile, these children, their parents and people around the world need answers regarding what comes next.”

“I still think we’re in a state of national crisis,” New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker told The Associated Press in an interview.

Until we get those answers, this crisis is never going to end.

Human Rights Crisis on the Border- Children of Immigrants Warehoused.

Immigrant Children

Officials from the Trump administration have been snatching children from their parents upon their arrival at the border, hoping to create a deterrent to immigrant parents trying to enter the United States.

Their concept is that fewer parents will ever try to enter the United States if they fear their children will be stolen from them.

Using the misery of children as a way to manipulate their parents is the act of a terrorist, not a president. Not only is this a cruel and savage policy, it isn’t even working. Leave it to the Republicans.

Friday’s revelation that the Trump administration separated 1,995 children from 1,940 adults between April 19 and May 31, according to a spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security, has painted more of the picture for us, in stark and ugly relief.

The administration’s “zero tolerance” policy, which was announced by the Department of Justice in April, separates children from their parents or legal guardians because the adults have been referred to DHS for prosecution for illegal entry into the United States.

The officials could not say whether parents were allowed to say goodbye to their parents before they are separated. Some reports have said parents are told their child is being taken to a separate facility for a bath, only to never see them again. In some cases, the children have been sent to places as far away as Chicago.

Separating parents from children was rare under the Obama administration and even the early Trump administration according to Reuters. They just started doing this, and it’s already been two thousand little kids. That’s approximately 46 children per day, over a six-week period.

We are not going to forget about those kids, and we’ll make sure no one else does, either. I wish there was more I could do.

The people who are responsible for this show no signs of allowing themselves to be held accountable by civilian authority. Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Oregon, when he tried to visit the facility on June 3, was turned away at the door. They also show no signs of planning to give those children back.

This is not the way things are done in the country we grew up in.

It seems like common sense to us, but not to the chief law enforcement officer in the country, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who used a Biblical passage on Thursday to try and justify these cruel and extreme actions.

“I would like to cite to you the Apostle Paul and his clear and wise command in Romans 13,” Sessions said in a speech to law enforcement officers in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Sessions went on to insist that the Bible argues Christians must “obey the laws of the government because God has ordained them for the purpose of order.”

That same Bible passage was formerly used to justify slavery. It’s worth remembering here that Coretta Scott King herself warned us about Jeff Sessions.

As a brief aside, there are few things worse than using the sincere and earnest faith held by others as a way to convince them to go along with something ugly. The history of Christianity in America is full of that already, and we’re not about to accept this anymore. Do not drag the Bible through the mud.

As it becomes more clear that our worst nightmares have come true with this president, it becomes more clear as well that we have come up against something here that we have really got to resist.

This is not a game, nor a faux revolution. They’re locking up children in warehouses and holding them hostage. You cannot look something like that in the face and turn away without having made a choice. Silence is consent.

Hitler could never have come to power without the “ordinary Germans” who were willing to turn their backs on it all, for a comfortable life and trains that ran on time.

The comparisons to Nazis grow harder to ignore by the hour. The White House barked at MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough for coming out and saying it, but he was right, of course.

If only Trump took not acting like a Nazi as seriously as he seems to take not looking like one.

We have to hold out hope that there are still people out there in his camp that can still be convinced not to support him, by shining light on what he’s doing and making it impossible to ignore. We will accept any help, we will work with anybody.

Going forward, we can keep the pressure on them by raising awareness about what they are doing. Trump’s new policy is repugnant even for him.

This is a human rights issue, one that may well be the biggest of our time, and history will not look well upon those who are on the wrong side of it.  We’ve got to keep speaking out until they finally hear us.

If ever there was a time for a widespread moral outcry, this is it.

Samantha Bee and the Big “C”- Ivanka the Feckless Gets Apology.

Ivanka the Feckless gets an apology.

Samantha Bee, host of TBS’ popular late night show Full Frontal, has recently come under fire.

Last week on her show, Bee urged Ivanka Trump to influence her father to desist from his vile and vicious immigration policies and was momentarily overcome with passion.

“Let me just say, one mother to another, do something about your dad’s immigration practices, you feckless c*nt,” she said. “He listens to you. Put on something tight and low cut and tell him to f******* stop it. Tell him it was an Obama thing and see how it goes, OK?”

Well said, except that describing anyone using the “C” word is wrong. That word is an ugly word that has hurt many women. We will not advocate or defend its use.

But the apology Bee gave last night suggested to us that she gets it. Quartz referred to it as the perfect apology, and we are in total agreement.

In her first show back Wednesday night, she addressed the situation directly, appearing on screen to speak directly to viewers before even the theme song had played.

“You know, a lot of people were offended and angry that I used an epithet to describe the president’s daughter and adviser last week,” Bee began. Noting that it is a word she had “used on the show many times, hoping to reclaim it,” she said that this time she used it “as an insult.”

“I crossed a line and I do apologize for that,” she continued. “The problem is that many women have heard that word at the worst moments of their lives. A lot of women don’t want that word reclaimed, they want it gone and I don’t blame them.”

As a quick background, Bee was ranting about the current crisis of migrant children going missing near the southern border of the U.S.

There are currently 1,500 children the U.S. government placed with sponsors that they now can’t locate, and while Bee was explaining this, she pivoted to Trump, who shared this photo of her enjoying Sunday morning with her own son while people on social media were raising awareness about the situation.

In conclusion, it is our opinion that Samantha Bee was far from wrong. Ivanka Trump is as feckless as can be. She just should have left out the “C” word. Her apology was perfect because it made that point vehemently.

Quartz Magazine referred to Ivanka’s tweet as “A socially tone-deaf moment”. That is the understatement of the year.

Tragedy on the Border- Immigrant Kids Torn From Parents by ICE.

ICE Rips Children Out Of Hands Of Parents.

The United States government, under the leadership of the Republican Party, has been systematically taking immigrant children away from their parents at the Mexican border.

The New York Times reported last month that more than 700 children have been separated from adults who claim to be their parents since October. More than 100 of those children were under the age of four.

This is unprecedented. In modern times, in America, this has not been done before. Children as young as 53-week old infants have literally been ripped out of the hands of their parents by uniformed American law enforcement.

Illegal immigrants are being detained by authorities on misdemeanor charges. While these parents do time, their kids are sent thousands of miles away. Another travesty is that this often happens people are not even trying to cross the border illegally. They’ve just come to alert the officials that they have arrived. Seeking asylum is not illegal.

And yet, hundreds of families have been subjected to this newest brutal tactic on the part of the ICE. This is not a bad dream! They really, truly are attempting to deter asylum-seeking immigrants by forcibly separating immigrant parents and children.

Chief of Staff John Kelly spoke on the matter, saying “The children will be taken good care of. They’ll be put into foster care, or whatever.”

“Or Whatever”? What sort of a human being are you, sir? What sort of an American? This is not what our country is about.

North Dakota Democrat Heidi Heitkamp recently said it best.

“What you’re doing to children when you take them away from their parents is the most trauma impactful thing you can do to a child. So let’s be good people and good Americans as it relates to how we treat children.”

The American Civil Liberties Union’s Border Litigation Project says it has obtained 30,000 pages of records documenting abuse and neglect of unaccompanied immigrant children by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

It has brought a national class-action lawsuit in their defense, and thank God someone has. But what is going on in this country, when we’ve got to beg the government, not to let our law enforcement officers steal babies from their parents??

Not a day goes by anymore when Americans don’t find ourselves assailed from some new direction. Shame and indignation have become part of our daily routine. But not like this. This is new.

The cruelty and stupidity of our 45th president have already become legend, especially as regards our Southern neighbors. During Hurricane Harvey last summer, he ordered Border Patrol checkpoints to stay open, even as the storm approached. He pardoned Joe Arpaio the same day.

By now, everyone knows. He really is the kind of person who would split up families as a deterrent, same as the Nazis did. And this current Congress, controlled as it is by other corrupt and complicit Republicans, will never stop him. So we have to help raise awareness. People have to know what they are doing before we can make them stop.

It is the recommendation of every single Millennial Democrat that people call their representatives. Tell the people in power how revolted you are. Tell them that this is not the country you were raised in and that you don’t intend to let it go any longer.

If we all ask the question at once, they will have to answer to us.

Spread the Word! #GOPTaxScam Is Part of a Crippling Long Game.

Hard times coming, if the GOP gets its way.

If top income tax cuts worked, then the middle class would have been gaining since 1980 instead of declining.

The last time the Democratic party held enough of a majority in all 3 branches of government for long enough to get a lot done was under Johnson in the 60’s.

They ended segregation in schools. They passed the Voting Rights Act so that black folks could vote. Passed the Civil Rights Act including provisions to protect those who aren’t old white men in the workplace. Passed Medicaid and Medicare which has helped all lower income a great deal. Secured critical funding for education infrastructure.

Since that time Republicans have been in power most of the time, and/or have held at least one branch in order to block the Democratic party from doing more. We Democrats did not even get two complete 2 year periods with a filibuster-proof majority.

Bill Clinton lost his after the first year, and Obama just barely had a filibuster-proof majority for a few months. The special election in Massachusetts caused Republican Scott Brown to be elected, which ended the filibuster-proof majority.

Even during this minuscule amount of time, they did an incredible amount of good work. The much-maligned bill that Bill Clinton passed on welfare reform is actually what got federal funding for many work and education programs, besides being absolutely necessary

It got more poor people into good paying jobs than any program ever has in the history of this country.

During Obama’s presidency, Nancy Pelosi alone did more good than all the Republicans to be elected since the 1960’s combined.

The $840 billion stimulus package, the Affordable Care Act, the Dodd-Frank banking-reform bill, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, and the Waxman-Markey climate bill all stand out as examples of the skill and professionalism that she has and they lack.

Millennial Democrats would like to send the following message to extremists of all shapes and sizes: It would be wiser to vote than sit out unless you want Republicans to keep making your lives harder. They’ve got an encyclopedia full of dirty tricks with which to do it, and they put all the mechanisms in place with Trump’s tyranny of a tax plan.

Top income federal tax cuts mean more taxes and cost increases for everyone else. The State doesn’t just do without lost revenue from top income, in a show of stately love toward citizen.

It is instead replaced at the local and state level through backdoor tax increases on low and middle income.

Reducing regulations just means allowing top income to take advantage of more people. Government regulations are all that protects low and middle-income people, especially wage earners.

Most of us read Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle in high school; for those who didn’t, it was about a factory worker from Poland eaten alive by the meatpacking industry of Chicago. The reason people aren’t living like that now is government regulation.

Be that as it may, however, there is a tendency on both ends of the political spectrum to revile government. To label all government as tyranny or fascism is to make the terms useless. There are people out there who benefit from the existent state of polarity. People have been taught to hate their government for a reason, by specific people.

Charles and David, the Koch brothers, are the sons of Frederick C. Koch, who co-founded Koch Industries. It has grown to be the second-largest privately held company in the United States, of which they own 84%. If their individual fortunes were combined in one place, they would likely represent the wealthiest person on earth.

They have used this gargantuan wealth to subjugate one of the two parties and subordinate it to an ultra-conservative and authoritarian agenda. They have spent a fortune on it.

Most estimates show numbers of more than a billion dollars, every one of which proves the rise of the Tea Party movement was far from an accident. It was orchestrated, and it was well funded.

It also had a deliberate aim: to destroy Washington’s ability to pay for its social programs, which would be to break Washington itself.

What we are seeing now is part of a long game. They know full well the Blue Wave is coming. They know Trump will not last long. There is a reason that they all retired as soon as the tax atrocity was passed.

It’s not about the near future. It’s about what’s going to be happening decades from now and what kinds of limitations Democratic leaders will face in the near future.

The tax plan was forced on us like saddlebags on a racehorse. It was meant to handicap and even cripple our long-term prospects as a democracy. An understanding of this going forward is where discussions of policy must begin. The long-term goal of Republicans is to shrink government until it is so small it can be drowned in a bathtub, in the words of tax-cut crusader Grover Norquist.

Let’s try and keep our heads above water, just the same.

Supreme Court Allows Immigrants Held Without Bond- A Slippery Slope.

A rotten decision.

The news has been flying hot and heavy lately on a number of different topics. One that has inspired a gigantic response, from both left and right, is the recent news from the Supreme Court that immigrants can be held by U.S. immigration officials indefinitely without receiving bond hearings, even if they have permanent legal status or are seeking asylum, the Supreme Court ruled Tuesday.

In a 5-3 ruling Tuesday, with one recusal, the court ruled that immigrants do not have the right to periodic bond hearings.

The court affirmed the right of the government to detain immigrants indefinitely behind bars.

“Immigration officials are authorized to detain certain aliens in the course of immigration proceedings while they determine whether those aliens may be lawfully present in the country,” Justice Samuel Alito wrote in the majority opinion.

There has been an ongoing class-action lawsuit about this, spearheaded by Alejandro Rodriguez, an immigrant with permanent legal status who was convicted of possession of a controlled substance and joyriding. He was detained by immigration officials for three years without a bond hearing.

The ACLU took up his case, eventually winning his release and the cancellation of his deportation order. The government’s appeal was begun under the Obama administration, and continued after Trump took office last year. That set a precedent which has now been reversed.

What’s really worth paying attention to here is that a man with permanent legal status, a citizen for all practical intents and purposes, has been yanked off the street on minor charges and done more time than he would have for the charges themselves, just because he was originally from another country.

Besides this decision being absolutely lousy according to any sort of ethical code, it’s also very dangerous.

The right-wing, particularly the ones who’ve been screaming apocalyptically that President Obama was coming for their guns and putting us all in FEMA camps these last eight years, ought to know what it’s like to live in fear of an authoritarian American government running rampant over the rights of the citizenry.

The incident of Ruby Ridge comes to mind as an example of a time when the far right themselves have been on the receiving end. Republicans need to be reminded of this, and it might even get through to some. More people took it seriously in a debate than I’d expected.

The significance of this event is heightened considerably by where it appears on the timeline of all this. It’s another brick in the wall in every possible sense; the Border Patrol is building a piece of wall on California’s land, right now. It’s another big sign that things are terribly wrong, in Donald Trump’s America.

This concerns us all. It’s a slippery slope leading right to the end of our democracy if we’re not careful. There’s no doubt at all that we’re in trouble on many different levels right now, and all of them are based on a steady attack on our nation’s institutions by its own president.

Mike Rogers, our current CIA director, warned the nation today that Trump has literally not given him permission to do anything to prevent the Russian efforts geared at hacking the new elections.

It was also confirmed today the Russians penetrated voter data in seven states at least and targeted at least 21. Still, though, Trump refuses to admit it’s anything but a hoax.

He’s been going around recently, boasting about the seven more years he’ll be in office. Now that Rick Gates is testifying against Manafort, though, it might not be seven more months.

Millennial Democrats will be releasing a piece soon on how to best protect your right to have your vote counted within the next day or two.

As this continues, we’re going to have to record these things for posterity and help to spread awareness as best we can, with the ultimate goal in mind of getting people to vote.

They cannot cheat us enough to win if we show up in our tens of millions.

First They Came For The Dreamers.

Resist the wall.

On the issue of immigration, America has been brought to a truly sickening pass by its chief executive.

Construction started on a California section of Trump’s border wall on Wednesday.

This time, we have got to get good and mad. If we acquiesce to Trump building that wall, it will be a stain on the country’s honour that no amount of centuries can wash clean.

Ultimately we will do whatever is necessary to save our friends and loved ones, and Trump knows that.

But what’s to stop him from pulling this again? What’s to stop him from grabbing any number of us, and holding our needs hostage to use against us later? DACA represents an obvious way to hijack us, but it’s not like there aren’t others; sooner or later, there’s something we all don’t want to lose.

Appeasement never works. Never. All throughout history, the only way to stop a bully from picking on you has been to knock his block off.

Never give Poland to Hitler, as the saying goes. Something has to come along and stop this.

Our leaders have done all they can and achieved remarkable successes, but past a certain point they have no power. We’re not in control of a single one of the halls of government currently.

Now that President Obama has been out of office a year, we’re going to start feeling the results of Trump’s new policy real soon.

To pay for this waste of a wall, there will be no end to new regulations, state and local increases, etc. It’s going to be a gigantic and constant defiling for everyone who’s not a billionaire.

It all comes back to how we take it. There is a point past which they cannot function. If all of us steadfastly refuse to participate, business as usual cannot possibly continue.

One is reminded of the Robert Frost poem beginning “Something there is that does not love a wall,” as he then goes on trying to convince his neighbor not to rebuild one on their property line.

If you truly want to make America great again, you don’t build a wall that symbolizes everything that America shouldn’t be and has always stood up against.

The Wall is an eyesore. Forget about what a waste of money it is, walls as fortifications haven’t done much good since the development of modern artillery.

Wall or no wall, there’s no keeping watch over 1300 miles of borderlands to keep people who are desperate to get here out.

These big nationalist types talk about making America great again by kicking out all the Americans who came from Mexico. But they’re also the ones hiring them on the sly to save money. If Trump really wanted illegal immigration to stop, he’d crack down on these big employers.

Last week around this time, the Senate rejected a bipartisan plan to save our Dreamers, even at the cost of conceding to the wall. Republican leaders joined the White House, intentionally blowing the likeliest chance for immigration legislation this election year. Nice work.

The White House threatened to veto the measure, which underscored the issue and emphasized what a hot button the issue has become, for both parties. The profound lack of partisan compromise remained as intractable as it’s been for years.

Even the focus on Dreamers, who polls show win wide public support, was not enough to overcome opposition by hard-line conservatives and far-left Democratic presidential hopefuls afraid of angering the voters they’ll soon be begging.

In the meantime, Customs and Border Protection is replacing a little more than 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) in downtown Calexico, a sliver of the president’s plan for a “big, beautiful wall” with Mexico.

We are down to the line, folks. The long game of the opposition is becoming clearer by the day. The outline of a plot to reverse the entire trend begun by the civil rights outline is taking form as the dust settles.

If the people of this country go back to sleep this time, if we quietly sit back and allow Trump to be normalized, we will never get up again. It will not matter that we aren’t in favor of the awful things they’re doing because we will not have any power with which to stop it.

It is the opinion of Millennial Democrats that we’ve got a year or two at most to turn this thing around. We will do this using the same means we’ve been using all along. Raising public awareness to expose and reveal these people for who they are and what they are doing. Hope is not lost, but it’s going to take a lot of hard work on the part of us all. Please join your strength with ours. Help us fix this. Before it is forever too late.

Never Give Poland To Hitler! Schumer Rejects Trump’s Immigration Plan.

Trumpolini

Democrats have roundly rejected Donald Trump’s callous new immigration plan, on the grounds of common sense and principle. As if we were all at a gigantic auto meet, he plans to pressure us to swap the future of our DACA recipients, or Dreamers, for that stupid wall of his.

Trump told Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer(D-NY) the following- If there is no wall, there is no DACA. Unbelieveable.

This is America. We don’t ruin and discard hundreds of thousands of lives, over a pile of bricks and cement, in America. These are people. Not baseball cards.

The Cambridge English Dictionary defines the word “callous” as describing someone who is unkind, cruel, and without sympathy or feeling for other people.

Trump’s new immigration scheme is an excellent working example.

Since it’s Trump, the tendency is to want to avoid shock and revulsion at a story like this, having been shocked thus so many times before, but it simply isn’t possible.

When did Trump voters become so afraid? What is it that has scared them so? These rhetorical questions point the way to a dead and sordid end.

At any rate, Democrats have flatly rejected the whole repugnant concept. Looks like we’re headed for another shutdown.

Although the plan did provide a quick fix security option for Dreamers, it would have done so at a cost of tremendous damage to the immigration system.

The deal was to provide a 10-12 year pathway to citizenship for the 700,000 Dreamers already registered in the program, plus roughly another million undocumented young people in similar straits.

In exchange, Trump’s White House expects Democrats, and pro-reform Republicans, to accede to proposals that will cut even legal immigration by an estimated 50 percent. Particularly, it will be limiting the flow of non-white immigrants.

It will also squander $25 billion on the wall.

That’s a lot of extra taxes, but the Trump voters don’t seem to understand. It’s like they still think Mexico is footing the bill.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi summed up the plan simply as “anti-immigrant.”

Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said Trump’s plan would institute Trump’s “hard-line immigration agenda on the backs of these young people.”

“President Trump and Republicans cannot be allowed to use Dreamers as a bargaining chip for their wish list of anti-immigrant policies,” said Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.).

As tempting as it is to give in to this, to protect our friends and our family, it would empower and embolden Trump immensely. The Wall was a signature campaign promise, and news of that $25 billion would have proved to his base once and for all that he’s their man- and many others too, most likely.

After that, they’ll be twice as greedy and twice as aggressive. We have no choice but to stymie them with steadfast resistance. This is the only logical way to proceed.

Trump would not stop with this, of course, even if we did give in. Tyrants never do.

Appeasement is a dirty word for a reason.

It means giving in to brutal dictators, meekly giving in to bullying force.

Above all, it casts the image of the 1938 Munich agreement, where the British prime minister Neville Chamberlain feebly gave in to the outrageous demands of Adolf Hitler, agreeing to allow the violent annexation of Sudeten Czechoslovakia without protest.

Hitler had promised Chamberlain that this would be the last of his territorial demands in Europe but still attacked Poland just under a year later, destroying Chamberlain’s reputation and beginning World War Two.

Never give Poland to Hitler.

Going forward, we are going to be raising awareness about what this plan actually consists of. We’re not going to accede to Trump’s insane demands. But we also have to make it clear why we said no.

Trump wants to use this proposed path to citizenship for young undocumented immigrants as an excuse to devastate the legal immigration system. This cannot be allowed.

“This plan flies in the face of what most Americans believe,” Schumer said on Twitter. While Trump “finally acknowledged that the Dreamers should be allowed to stay here and become citizens, he uses them as a tool to tear apart our legal immigration system and adopt the wish list that anti-immigration hard-liners have advocated for years.”

Schumer’s decision marks the strategic direction of the Democratic opposition.

We are not going to accede to any deal that’s going to hurt the country in the long run, and it’s really sad that our own President would put us in this position. It is sadder still that he sees nothing of value in all these people than a bargaining chip in political negotiations.

We have to find a way forward on immigration that will not come back to haunt us in the future.

Water from the Rock- Dems Gain Toehold With Shutdown.

Dems win.

Democratic leadership in the Senate has managed to draw water from the rock. The weekend-long filibuster that shut down the government succeeded in extracting concessions on the immigration issue from a hostile majority party and insane White House.

The Senate vote to reopen the government was finally confirmed after it became clear Democrats were going to continue to block the spending bill over what do about young people affected by DACA until Republicans agreed to grow a soul.

The Republicans did not intend to compromise at all on this issue, and right now they hold all the cards. But ultimately, they did.

That is a measure of victory.

A government shutdown is not a joke.

The last shutdown happened in 2013 and lasted 16 days.

Nearly 800,000 federal employees were out of work without pay.

More than a million other working employees had their paychecks delayed.

According to estimates by the financial services company Standards & Poor’s, the last government shutdown cost America $24 billion, or $1.5 billion a day.

Democrats forced the shutdown with a heavy heart. We demanded a vote on legislation to protect Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients from deportation after Trump unexpectedly cancelled the program. The final agreement involved a vote on the issue by February.

GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina appeared alongside GOP Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Jeff Flake of Arizona, and made the following statement. “Here’s what I predict. Once we start talking about immigration and voting on immigration, we’ll find 60 votes to make sure these DACA recipients’ lives are not ruined by March 5.”

Critically, we were also able to secure funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program(CHIP). Monday’s deal to end the shutdown included a six-year reauthorization of the program, which will go on without any children losing their health insurance.

Still, it’s important not to try and cast a light on this whole incident as a win for us. It wasn’t. There was never any path to a victory here.

On Monday, a senior Republican aide told CNN that McConnell wasn’t planning to provide any firmer commitment on immigration than he already has.
“If that’s not enough for Democrats, then we’re in this for the long haul,” the aide added.
That leaves us with a hard road ahead.
It’s like the old Steinbeck book, In Dubious Battle. Sometimes you have to fight, even when you know you’re going to lose. And that’s what we just did. We took a stand. Many of our guys are up for re-election next year, in states that Trump won by a lot. It took a lot of courage.
Progressive holdouts are shrieking bloody murder, of course, but that was going to happen no matter what.
It’s a noble struggle that was just undertaken, actually. And the ones who kept on holding out were risking nothing in so doing; they’re not up for reelection this year. They’re just posing as presidential candidates.
There’s no doubt they’re doing all they can to make our lives difficult, and it’s becoming harder to hold the center because of them.
Here’s the thing, though- All of them are lemmings. The only thing that has stopped them from hurling themselves off a cliff so far is us. If we are not able to hold them back, they will all get rid of themselves. History has already proven this. George McGovern, the Bernie Sanders of his day, was slaughtered so thoroughly by Richard Nixon that his entire electoral concept- as visualized by him- was essentially refuted on the spot.
In the real world, adults who want to make actual progress have to be realistic. Sometimes compromises with people we’d rather not deal with are necessary.

Our Democratic leadership put their own necks on the chopping block and shut down the government for the sake of our Dreamers. They are now being raked over the coals from both angles, and that is just lousy.

They are national treasures, and we are very proud of them.

Going forward, we’ve got to raise awareness of how much we actually accomplished given the circumstances.

Democratic activist Sheila Jones wrote to us on the subject.

“The issue will not now be debated only behind closed doors in Congress. It will be decided in the public forum, and 87% of the public is for DACA. So we can wipe the floor with them.”

We’ve got to stick up for Chuck Schumer. And we’ve got to prepare ourselves to fight this whole battle again, in three weeks. See you in the trenches.
