Roseanne Gets Canned! Social Ostracism in the Trump Era.

Roseanne Gets Canned

The Roseanne revival has been canceled, due to the big mouth and cruel streak of the woman it takes its name from.  She tweeted some repugnant remarks about Valerie Jarrett, a former top aide to President Barack Obama, and got herself fired and her show shut down.

ABC announced it was canceling “Roseanne” within hours of the Twitter outburst, and even before that, consulting producer Wanda Sykes quit.

Trump supporters are furious. They say Roseanne’s free speech is being violated, even though she got fired for being blatantly racist. It is our opinion that they all live in fear of the same thing happening to them.

The same people who today are so concerned about Roseanne’s “free speech” were just celebrating the NFL forbidding players from silently and peacefully protesting during the National Anthem.

Incidents like these have piled up, in every walk of American life. The incident is symptomatic of what the Southern Poverty Law Center has referred to as “the Trump effect“, which it has called a virus in our country. This is bigger than Roseanne(no fat-shaming intended).

Getting rid of uncloseted bigots as ABC has done by ending this show is part of the cure, but the simple fact remains. You’ll never get rid of a disease just by treating its symptoms. You’ve got to get at the root cause to destroy it, and that means getting rid of Donald Trump.

Valerie Jarrett herself pointed out that “The Tone starts at the Top“.

Jarrett, a former top aide to President Barack Obama, reacted with characteristic class and grace to Barr’s racist Twitter rant. She pointed out that we can learn from this, and that the incident should become “a teaching moment.”

That is the difference between Republicans and Democrats.

Knowing who she is these days, ABC should have known better than to bring Roseanne back on TV.  Her ugly comments and attitude made the entire project a highly dubious proposition, and it’s not like they were hard to find. All you have to do is sign up for Twitter.

But they do seem to have corrected their mistake, and small wonder. No one with any sort of a life wants to be associated with this.

Even in the Trump era, they know they will lose all their friends.

The comments made by Roseanne about Valerie Jarrett were disgusting and they do not bear repeating. It will suffice to say they were worth getting fired over. But compared to things that Donald Trump has said and done, they were hardly remarkable.

It is pretty sad when the President of the United States of America cannot be held to a higher standard than an aging and demented sitcom comedian, but the simple fact remains. This is where we are.

This is the Great America Trump promised. This is what it looks like, this is what it sounds like. These are its values. This is our environment now.

The time will come when we get out from under this, and when it does, it’s important that we never forget who the bigots were.

Complete and total social ostracism will do a lot to deter a repeat of this sort of thing. It will help to ensure that the next generation doesn’t try and make this sort of a play.

This ruptured attempt at a revival has been emblematic. It’s the Trump presidency in microcosm. Identical failure factors were in play.

What it ultimately comes down to is that you are going to have a much harder time dealing with people when they cannot stand your company, and if you persist in your nonsense too far they will get rid of you.

People don’t want you around if you’re going to insist on always being vulgar and ugly and loud.

If you are an obnoxious celebrity, it’s one thing. If you’re an obnoxious celebrity who’s been elected President of the world’s single superpower, it’s quite another.

In the last analysis, at least one thing has to be conceded to Roseanne. She accurately portrayed the way Trump voters look at the world. She gave them a few laughs, and she gave them something to scream about.

And she gave them all a look at their fate, in the post-Trump era.

Memorial Day and the Trump Effect- An Emptiness of Empathy.

Memorial Day and the Trump Effect.

America is celebrating its second Memorial Day underneath the reign of Donald Trump, and it’s worth reflecting on exactly what that means.

Memorial Day is a special day for America. It gives society a way to show gratitude to those who have carried upon their lives the burdens and responsibilities of war.

The Atlantic’s David Frum wrote today “To care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan” is a promise not denominated only in dollars and cents. We commit spiritually, too, to do our limited human best to understand and appreciate the losses and suffering imposed by the defense of the nation.”

These kinds of subtleties are lost on our 45th president.

Trump spent his day boasting about the economy he’s been ravaging on Twitter. Later he made a speech and laid a wreath, but the speech he made was an abject lesson of insincerity, where he said all the usual things and made reference to “Our Heroes”.

Trump has never had a military hero. On the contrary. He has repeatedly used and politicized the military, not to mention badly disrespected it.

Our heroes- the heroes of the people of America- is a term that includes Sen. John McCain(R-AZ), who Trump has disdained for years. He even mocked the time McCain spent in a POW camp in Vietnam, saying he prefers “people who didn’t get captured”.

Just recently, some White House staffer sneered at his words, saying that his opinion doesn’t matter because he is dying. Trump said nothing. Not one kind word was spent on our hero John McCain.

The commander-in-chief of our military is a man who was never in Vietnam at all, win or lose. He was able to dodge the draft because of his “bone spurs”– and his daddy’s money. Poor people didn’t get out of going to Vietnam for bone spurs.

The instance of John McCain is not the only time he’s proved himself a hypocrite on the matter of his supposed admiration for veterans. Trump has had numerous back-and-forths with the military.

Trump has said, “I know more about ISIS than the generals do, believe me.”

Trump has said US generals were “reduced to rubble” by Obama.
While campaigning in 2016, Trump spent nearly a week disparaging the Gold Star family of Humayun Khan, a Muslim soldier killed in a suicide attack in Iraq, back in 2004.

He told Khan’s mother to remain silent, because, as a Muslim wife, she “wasn’t allowed to have anything to say.”

After he got elected, four Army soldiers were killed in Niger in an ambush in October 2017. Trump remained quiet for 12 days. He then disputed comments alleging that he told the widow of Sgt. La David Johnson he “knew what he signed up for” and forgot the soldier’s name.

The list goes on, as it tends to with our 45th president.

Trump has also lied about donations he’s made to the military. He spent the first few months of 2016 claiming he sent nearly $6 million to veterans groups nationwide, but Washington Post reporter David Fahrenthold couldn’t find any evidence of any donations.

After Fahrenthold asked and asked about the money, Trump held a news conference in May, assuring he had sent out his donations.

It turned out he sent most of them within a week of the press conference or, in some cases, on the same day Fahrenthold interviewed him about the mystery money.

For all his sentimentality in appropriating soldiers, a more honest look at how Trump feels about memorializing veterans was available this weekend. For sale. On his webstore.

On Saturday, the online shop associated with the Donald J. Trump for President web site posted an advertisement on Trump’s Facebook page.

“In honor of Memorial Day, we’re doing 25% off all #MAGA gear!”

This is what Donald Trump really thinks of the military. Something he can cash in on.

The Southern Poverty Law Center has repeatedly criticized the president for “the Trump effect“, which it has called a virus in our country.

More and more members of our armed forces are realizing what this means for the democracy they fought for, and from what we can see, they’re getting fed up. They’re waking to the reality that what’s worst for Trump and the Republicans is what’s best for America.

One headline we came across while researching this piece was called “Three younger veterans stake a generational claim on the Democratic Party”. Millennial Democrats, standing up. That’s what we like to see.

Going forward, we can raise awareness by equipping ourselves with the facts. Every time Trump and his supporters start tooting their own horns about the military, we can remind them of how he got his Purple Heart. He was handed it, the same as he was handed his money.

A veteran in Virginia gave Trump a Purple Heart medal during an August 2016 campaign speech — and the future commander-in-chief saw nothing untoward in accepting it.

“I always wanted to get a Purple Heart,” he said proudly, pinning it to his lapel. “This way is a lot easier.”

The quick and easy way is not what got us here. In the age of Donald Trump, we can all use a reminder of that.

Tragedy on the Border- Immigrant Kids Torn From Parents by ICE.

ICE Rips Children Out Of Hands Of Parents.

The United States government, under the leadership of the Republican Party, has been systematically taking immigrant children away from their parents at the Mexican border.

The New York Times reported last month that more than 700 children have been separated from adults who claim to be their parents since October. More than 100 of those children were under the age of four.

This is unprecedented. In modern times, in America, this has not been done before. Children as young as 53-week old infants have literally been ripped out of the hands of their parents by uniformed American law enforcement.

Illegal immigrants are being detained by authorities on misdemeanor charges. While these parents do time, their kids are sent thousands of miles away. Another travesty is that this often happens people are not even trying to cross the border illegally. They’ve just come to alert the officials that they have arrived. Seeking asylum is not illegal.

And yet, hundreds of families have been subjected to this newest brutal tactic on the part of the ICE. This is not a bad dream! They really, truly are attempting to deter asylum-seeking immigrants by forcibly separating immigrant parents and children.

Chief of Staff John Kelly spoke on the matter, saying “The children will be taken good care of. They’ll be put into foster care, or whatever.”

“Or Whatever”? What sort of a human being are you, sir? What sort of an American? This is not what our country is about.

North Dakota Democrat Heidi Heitkamp recently said it best.

“What you’re doing to children when you take them away from their parents is the most trauma impactful thing you can do to a child. So let’s be good people and good Americans as it relates to how we treat children.”

The American Civil Liberties Union’s Border Litigation Project says it has obtained 30,000 pages of records documenting abuse and neglect of unaccompanied immigrant children by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

It has brought a national class-action lawsuit in their defense, and thank God someone has. But what is going on in this country, when we’ve got to beg the government, not to let our law enforcement officers steal babies from their parents??

Not a day goes by anymore when Americans don’t find ourselves assailed from some new direction. Shame and indignation have become part of our daily routine. But not like this. This is new.

The cruelty and stupidity of our 45th president have already become legend, especially as regards our Southern neighbors. During Hurricane Harvey last summer, he ordered Border Patrol checkpoints to stay open, even as the storm approached. He pardoned Joe Arpaio the same day.

By now, everyone knows. He really is the kind of person who would split up families as a deterrent, same as the Nazis did. And this current Congress, controlled as it is by other corrupt and complicit Republicans, will never stop him. So we have to help raise awareness. People have to know what they are doing before we can make them stop.

It is the recommendation of every single Millennial Democrat that people call their representatives. Tell the people in power how revolted you are. Tell them that this is not the country you were raised in and that you don’t intend to let it go any longer.

If we all ask the question at once, they will have to answer to us.

Democratic Women Sweep Primaries! No Revolutions, Please.

Lizzie Fletcher wins in Texas!

Voters went to the polls across four southern states on Tuesday to vote in Democratic primary elections, and brought with them a sharp refutation to radical leftist narratives from earlier in the election cycle.

Candidates favored by the national Democratic Party establishment did very well. Their more extreme competition, in most cases, did not.

These primaries were overwhelmingly swept by moderate Democratic women and were key to a number of congressional districts considered critical for our chances to win back the House.

They are also significant, in that they are highlighting the general trend of Democratic women emerging as leaders, and of the American people finding their way back to political moderation.

This fall’s races in these four Southern states will have a lot to say about whether or not we Democrats will be able to complete our task of redefining regional politics, in preparation for the battle to come this fall.

Our ability to do that is what retaking control of the House of Representatives will depend on.

Progressive ideas have flourished in the post-2016 Democratic Party, and real changes are coming. But it’s real Democrats who are making them happen. The ones who are members of the party.

The people who say the word “progressive” most are the ones now running groups like Our Revolution, an apparatus created after the election for bringing Bernie Sanders’s political revolution down-ballot continues to struggle to establish itself as a real difference-maker.

This group has done so badly since that we’re about done even mentioning them. They’re withering on the vine on their own. Most of their candidates bombed out terribly today.

Politico recently did a piece on the Sanders-inspired organization. It’s no longer merely withering. It’s going down in flames. They are not helping and they are not the ones spearheading the drive toward tangible change.

The Democratic Party as a whole is moving leftward along the political spectrum, in terms of policy and temperament. A recent survey by the Pew Research Center, which takes a periodic look at partisanship on various issues, indicates that to be true.

That’s a good thing, so long as we don’t push too hard and blow it like the radical left insists on doing. Most everyone is sick of “revolution”. We’ve been headed left for more than twenty years. And it has nothing to do with Bernie Sanders and his proxies.

There has never been a set of midterms so crucial. Everyone on every side knows this. The best chance we’ve got of getting rid of Donald Trump before 2020, except maybe for the 25th Amendment, is to turn the Congress blue.

We need Democrats in the legislative branch to get this country turned around again, and to get rid of Donald Trump.

We need each other right now more than ever, and in spite of all this, there’s a certain element on the left that refuses to care about any of this and instead insists on fighting their own people. That has to stop.

I saw a good point in an article a while back about progressive energy at the local level; awesome. It takes us all. Working together, and not against each other.

It’s not about rejecting progressive ideas; just the opposite. Democrats are all progressives. The 2016 platform was progressive to a magnificent degree.

But in order to be truly progressive, you’ve got to demonstrate that you can make progress. Our Revolution has shown no ability to tip a major Democratic election in its favor, despite possessing Sanders’ prized email list, and can claim no major wins in 2018 as its own.

This has reportedly left many Sanders supporters feeling disillusioned. The group was designed to harness the senator’s grass-roots movement and carry it forward in his name. Many true believers have seen that it is failing in its mission.

Either way, while the top brass of the aforementioned organization is eating each other, the rest of us have a lot of work to do.

It’s time to start focusing on the positives and putting the past to bed, and this finally brings us around to some good news. Some news about unity.

In Georgia, Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders and Our Revolution all supported Stacey Abrams in her primary race for governor, and she won!

Her win was historic, as she will be the first black woman to be a candidate of a major party to run for Governor in Georgia. It marks the beginning of a new direction for the party. This is truly the year of the Democratic woman.

2018- The Year of the Democratic Woman!

The Year of the Democratic Woman!

Seven Democratic women won their primaries in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, a promising sign for Democrats.

Emily’s List, the political action committee for pro-choice Democratic women recently did a piece headlined with the words, ‘The 2018 Election Looks Like Women’s Work‘.  The organization said to Vox that since Trump’s election last year, it has heard from more than 20,000 women expressing interest in running for elected office.

The group had to knock down a wall in its Washington office to make room for more staff. That’s impressive.

That so many Pennsylvania women are running and winning matches the current political trend. More than twice as many women are running for Congress nationwide in 2018 than in 2016. They’re winning their primaries in large numbers, and the overwhelming majority of those women are Democrats.

“In the three districts that the Democrats have a good chance to pick up- Pennsylvania 4, 5, and 6- the nominees are women,” said G. Terry Madonna, the director of the Center for Politics and Public Affairs at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, in an interview.

Madonna cited the #MeToo movement and the Parkland shooting as primary motivations for many women running for office. In Pennsylvania, a number of female candidates made gun control a top priority.

“Throw in the unpopularity of Trump with Democratic women, and you’ve got a mixture that brought women (candidates),” Madonna said.

Women voters, in total, were one of the smartest demographical blocs in 2016, and the disastrous result of that election has galvanized them to action in record numbers. They have taken the country by storm.  The Blue Wave is going to end up landing a lot of women in Congress.

Meanwhile, a string of high-profile departures of prominent Republican women threatens to leave the House with fewer Republican women next year. This also indicates the national trend very well.

Women are disgusted with the Republican Party. They are flocking from it in droves. The endless scandals of sexual abuse that their candidates lug around like baggage have made it harder and harder to turn a blind eye; remember Roy Moore? And the worst of them all is currently the president.

The words and actions of Donald Trump have been so ugly towards women over the years that it’s really impossible to overstate. Stormy Daniels comes to mind.

She recently went public with the full story of intimidation, bullying, and misogyny that she was put through by the slob who is now our President. It’s typical of him. It seems like women have had enough.

Michelle Obama said to Trump voting women who voted against Hillary Clinton that they “voted against their own voice”. It seems as though many have started to figure that out.

The movement of women towards politics this year has not been restricted to candidates. Experienced female political operatives also are getting active like never before.

Their goals are to raise money and awareness, energize volunteers and give female candidates a hand with everything from fundraising to figuring out how to balance childcare during campaigns.

It’s too early to tell how the movement will change Washington in the long term. But it’s clear that a transformation has already begun. In dozens of interviews with TIME, Democratic women talked about what caused that metamorphosis.

In 2016, they were ordinary voters. In 2017, they became activists, spurred by the theft of the presidency from Hillary Clinton, the first major female presidential candidate at the hands of a self-described pussy grabber. And in 2018, they’ve become candidates on the front lines.

We have these doctors and mothers and teachers and executives, diving headlong into the mix and bringing new vitality to a Democratic Party whose need for them is greater than it’s ever been before. A great deal depends on us being able to free this country from the grasp of the criminals who are running it now.

Going forward, we can help this along by making sure our support is felt. We can ask women to share their stories with us and listen when they do. We can make it a point to seek out their perspectives.

We asked for leaders, after 2016, and these are the human beings who have stepped up. Now it’s 2018, and the midterms are nearly upon us.

We’re going to stand behind them every way we can.

One Year In- 45th Fumes As Mueller Investigation Turns Two.

The Mueller investigation heats up as we enter Year Two.

Yesterday was the one year anniversary of the formation of the special counsel investigation headed by Robert Mueller, and what a year it’s been.

Initially, its mandate was to investigate what the newly elected president knew about Russian interference into the 2016 election. But it quickly became clear that the president’s possible criminal tendencies would make it necessary to go a lot farther.

The president’s old lawyer, Ty Cobb, told him this would all be over by now. He got fired. The top lawyers in the country all refused to replace him. And then his personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, got busted himself, and was replaced by former NYC mayor Rudy Giuliani, who is both over the hill and insane.

All is not well in the White House.

Over the past three decades, the man the Russians helped to elect as the president has allegedly committed just about every crime there is, from tax evasion to domestic abuse to sexual assault.

They say the past always catches up, and it seems like in this case, that is true.

In the last year, we have seen the myriad investigations into Donald Trump range all over the place, as America continues to learn more and more about what manner of man holds court in its highest office. This last week has illustrated the situation for us, in microcosm.

The Senate Judiciary Committee released hundreds of pages of interviews relating to Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. A few from Donald Trump Jr. shed light on a critical meeting between Trump campaign brass and Russians at Trump Tower in June 2016.

The Senate Intelligence Committee announced that it agreed with the Intelligence Community’s assessment that Russia sought to interfere in the 2016 election to help Trump and hurt Hillary Clinton.

And the Office of Government Ethics made public Trump’s 2017 financial disclosure statement.

That one hurts him.

This document is stone cold proof that he reimbursed Michael Cohen, his personal lawyer, for the $130,000 paid in hush money to adult film actress Stormy Daniels.

Obviously very damning, but by then it was old news.

That one came courtesy of Trump’s lawyer, former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, who really loves to talk.

He told us all that Trump knew of the Cohen payments on Sean Hannity’s talk show a day after he got the spot on the bench of Trump’s legal team. You’d think that would have taught him to shut up, but it didn’t. Earlier this week, he was talking again, to CNN’s Dana Bash.

He was boasting that he had been told by the special counsel’s office that they did not believe they could indict a sitting president, as per Justice Department regulations established during the Nixon era.

Who expected that? We’re obviously not going to send the sitting president to prison! He’d have to stand up for the morning head count, in the middle of security briefings! That was never the plan, it would be ludicrous.

If Rudy’s intent was to console his capo, by reassuring him he’s not getting locked up next week, it seems to this Millennial Democrats contributor that he has admirably failed in that duty.

What Giuliani’s speech really did, was to let us know things have gotten so serious, that Mueller and his team have probably been considering disregarding the previous Justice Department regulations and locking him up anyway.

It’s hard to understand why a legal expert would do this much talking, even if he is demented and past his prime. It doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense. But that’s the nature of this administration and life in the country during it. Nothing makes sense, everything is topsy-turvy.

The same celebrities we loved twenty years ago have all turned into monsters, because they stepped into the political arena. They’re all so many fish out of the water. They don’t look any happier to be in power as we are to have them there.

As we prepare to follow this investigation into its second year, the big takeaway from the first one is that Donald Trump is almost certainly at least as guilty as Richard Nixon. But unlike Nixon, he probably won’t resign for the good of the country. And that is where the true crisis lies.

When Robert Mueller makes his recommendation at the end of all this, he very well may ultimately walk up to the desk of Rod Rosenstein and say Yeah, he did it! He knew everything!

It would then be the duty of the legislative branch to impeach him. Judging from their past conduct, it’s all too possible that this Congress, with their Republican majority, may not. They have undermined the Russiagate investigation from its first day.

If Trump is guilty and the Republicans ignore it, our democracy will have faced its greatest peril. We’ve got to do everything in our power to see to it that the Republicans in control of the House and Senate act with honor and fulfill their pledge to defend this country against tyranny, from within or without.

If they do not, we will soon go the way of the Roman Empire.

As this article was getting ready to publish, the news broke that Rudy Giuliani is talking again. This morning, he says that Robert Mueller has agreed to narrow the scope of his questioning in order to interview Donald Trump himself.

We’ll have to wait and see.

Israel and the Iran Deal Pullout- 45th Upends Middle Eastern Balance.

Trump ruins all he touches.

Donald Trump has dealt a severe blow to the global order with his decision to pull the United States out of the Iranian nuclear agreement, causing a major rift with European allies and raising tensions in the Middle East.

Concerns are growing daily that the recent decisions made by Donald Trump will do much to destabilize a region that has long been unstable anyway.

Israel and Iran, both of whom seemed emboldened in the face of the new situation, fired missiles at each other Wednesday across the Syrian border. They followed up with bristling threats in a steep escalation of tensions.

In days, we’re set to make the Israeli embassy move from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, something other US presidents have held off on, due to their reasonable belief that it would not help us keep the peace down there.

The merits and flaws of the embassy move itself are not our points of focus here. It’s a separate issue.

We’d like to give our best wishes to the people of Israel and Iran, and all other people, for that matter. If everybody there is cool with the embassy being in Jerusalem, then we’re happy for them. But that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Our issue is the haphazard and ill-thought out manner in which the current executive administration made this decision. There is no sign at all that Trump fully understands just how serious his decisions have become. He’s not a reality TV star anymore.

We have also seen this recently in North Korea, as Trump boasts of his ability to “bring the North Koreans to the table”. The North Koreans bring themselves to the table, every time they need a few bucks. But Trump doesn’t get it. He seems to really think that Kim is giving up his nukes.

Kim is never giving up his nukes, of course, and neither will anybody else who manages to get them, now that they’ve seen how Trump reneged on the nuclear arrangement we had with Iran. What a mess. It’s been quite a while since Iranians were burning American flags in the streets, and screaming “Death to America!” But they sure are doing it now.

Former Mideast negotiator Dennis Ross, speaking on NPR, said Trump’s decision to abrogate the terms of the nuclear deal is likely spurring Iran to show the US that it will pay a price, which most likely led to the missile launches Wednesday.

Dr. Alina Polyakova of the Atlantic Council gave a talk on the world order last year, in which she illustrated its fracture points, meaning geographical locations that constitute stressors upon it. Ukraine was one, Syria was another. We can now add Iran and Israel to that list.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Europe could no longer depend on the United States, comments that were echoed by French President Emmanuel Macron. Both leaders had made eleventh-hour trips to Washington to try and talk Trump out of the leaving the Iran pact.

“It’s another blow to the trans-Atlantic alliance,” said Sen. Bob Menendez(D-N.J.), ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. “The Europeans don’t know what to make anymore about how strong and how deep our alliance is with them. And we need them. We critically need them to achieve many of our goals, both as it relates to Iran and other things.”

Everyone in the world seems to get this, except for our 45th president.

Perhaps the situation was summed up worst by the National Security Council’s senior director for strategic assessment, Victoria Coates.

“I think it shows you that the President is absolutely doing the right thing here,” Coates said to reporters during a press conference held Friday. “It is not upsetting any regional balance; in fact, his leadership is what’s bringing the region together.”

Good thing Iran doesn’t have any nukes. In a few years, though, hold on to your hats.

North Korean Nukes- 45th Boasts Of Imaginary Deal.

#NeverTrump

As North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and the United States President Donald Trump prepare to meet, the world is feeling the tension. It is not clear that either of the two fully understands what is at stake.

Trump went around last month tweeting that North Korea had agreed to denuclearization. “Meeting went very smoothly and a good relationship was formed…Denuclearization will be a great thing for World, but also for North Korea!”

“We should all root for a diplomatic solution to the decades’ long North Korean conflict,” Chuck Schumer said April 18 on the Senate floor. “That’s why the United States should pursue a diplomatic opening, including through direct diplomacy with Pyongyang. But thus far we’ve not seen any indication that North Korea is willing to take concrete measures towards denuclearization.”

Nor will we, in the opinion of this Millennial Democrats contributor.

The only place that smooth meeting happened was in Trump’s mind. North Korea agreed to no such thing. They talked about it. That’s all. A conversation is a long way from a signed agreement.

For decades, the international community has tried to stop North Korea’s nuclear weapon and missile development. It has failed. The thought of Trump pulling it off is absurd.

Kim is never giving up his nukes. He will nuke himself before he gives up his nukes. He nuked his own backyard and ruined the mountain above the facility where he makes his nukes, rather than stop testing.

Nuclear weapons are the one sure insurance plan that a small power can have against a great one. The world was watching when George W. Bush kicked down the door of Saddam Hussein’s palace.

Kim knows we’ll do the same to him anytime we get a chance. He’ll never let that happen.

In related news, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo flew home from North Korea yesterday with three U.S. citizens who had been detained there. We welcome them home and are grateful for their safety; Kim snatched them under dubious circumstances and gave them back like bargaining chips.

To the unpleasant occupant of the Oval Office, who has been going around boasting that he’s cut the big deal of a lifetime, that must pass for a denuclearization agreement.

“People never thought you were going to have a situation where we’re having serious and positive communications with North Korea. And we are,” Donald Trump told reporters yesterday morning.

On the contrary, this has been tried again and again. We have engaged in on-and-off nuclear negotiations with North Korea since the end of the Cold War. They failed to prevent Pyongyang from developing nuclear weapons. We have not established diplomatic relations, and a peace treaty ending the Korean War has not been signed.

We did have a serious, positive denuclearization deal with Iran, though. Trump scuttled it earlier this month. So much for bargaining skill.

Kim gave those people back because it put on a good show. His goal here is to get us to relieve the sanctions that are crippling his economy again for a while. His father did the same to Bill Clinton and to George W. Bush after him. It is not the brilliance of Trump diplomacy that has suddenly brought them to the table.

This reticent and peculiar country has promised disarmament more than once, only to backtrack on its commitments. It has duped multiple U.S. presidential administrations, each of which has passed the North Korea problem onto the next.

That pattern is likely being repeated.

Going forward, the usual task of raising awareness will fall on us, since conservative talk radio is already gloating and spinning this up as a Trump win. Regardless of his boasting, Trump did not accomplish anything here. He’s spinning his wheels like every single other American president has done.

The difference is that during the tenure of past presidents, North Korea did not have the hydrogen bomb. Those presidents were not maniacs, hanging around on Twitter deriding the size of the North Korean leader’s buttons and calling him Little Rocket Man.

It’s a complex situation, and a lot of different things might happen, but at least one thing is for sure. If anything good does happen here, it won’t be the fault of Donald Trump.

Racist Bernie Bros and Joy Reid- When Progressives Impede Progress.

This is what we're fighting.

A group of fanatical Bernie Sanders supporters went scrounging around the Internet recently, digging up old blog posts of a homophobic nature published many years ago by JoyAnn Reid, host of MSNBC’s popular morning talk show AM Joy.

There are no doubt the content of the posts were wrong. Reid apologized for the unkind things she’d said in the past, owned it, and moved forward. Her apology serves as a model for us all.

But that is not the issue here. Those posts were dug up and released for a reason. And genuine concern over the threat Joy Reid might pose to the LGBT community does not appear to be it.

It is the opinion of Millennial Democrats that it happened because Reid’s past political commentary has been critical of Bernie Sanders.

One recent article published by Medium’s Investigator recently was called “The Twitter lynching of Joy Ann Reid by the Bernie Left.”

An outsider might be taken aback by the vehemence of such a statement, especially as a headline. But it happens to be true. And its contents tell a very ugly story.

An Internet campaign was started by Bernie supporters under the hashtag #FireJoyReid in November 2017 after Reid “made the mistake” of mentioning Jane Sanders in a series of tweets.

Jane Sanders flipped out.

“Don’t ever use me to demean my husband,” she shot at Reid on Twitter.

The ongoing conflict between Reid and Sanders supporters is something anyone can witness for themselves, through a quick Google search for “Joy Reid Bernie Sanders.”

Their hatred of Joy Reid is fanatical at best. At worst it is dangerous and insane, like Bernie supporter James T.Hodgkinson, who shot up the Congress last summer and winged Rep. Steve Scalise.

From 2015 forward, a group of extreme leftists has systematically harassed, stalked and targeted for doxing black activists, journalists, and contributors on Twitter and other social media sites. The list includes many notable figures, such as Donna Brazile, Kamala Harris, Maxine Waters, and Joy Reid.

Medium’s Investigator did the research necessary to identify its core members- a tightly knit group of Bernie Bros.

They identify usually as members of the DSA (Democratic Socialists of America), and they all proudly proclaim to have voted for Jill Stein.

Among many other unpleasant characteristics, the group makes a practice of producing, tweeting, and retweeting racist pictures, like this one of Kamala Harris.

People of color, and watermelon. Real clever, right?

Behind this campaign is the fact that a lot of black voters didn’t vote for Bernie. The anger this produced by a part of the Bernie left has been gigantic. That’s hard to understand, given Bernie’s record, but that is beside the point.

This Millennial Democrats contributor would be hard-pressed to think of a single other circumstance, in which white people could treat black people like this, without hardly a soul being outraged.

The Sanders insurgency is largely a white revolution. All the talk about Sanders representing the future of the Democratic Party because of his titanic popularity among young people ignores a crucial factor.

Minority voters weren’t buying it.

Back in 2016, when Hillary Clinton won big in the Southern primaries, Sanders sniffed that scheduling early primaries in the South “distorts reality.” The message that sends? They’re just black voters.

Anecdotally, this writer remembers being told during the election, that the South “did not matter”, because their states would go red in the general election. Were that to be accepted as truth, it would disenfranchise half the country’s Democrats and a huge percentage of the black ones.

Back in 2014, during a number of interviews, Bernie described the type of voters he wanted to appeal to.

He says working-class white voters have abandoned Democrats in large numbers. The party, he says, has “not made it clear that they are prepared to stand with the working-class people of this country, take on the big money interests.”

And more recently, when he scoffed at President Barack Obama on the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King, his comments made it all too clear just how greatly he values the rest.

Well, here’s what you got. What you got is an African-American president, and the African-American community is very, very proud that this country has overcome racism (Editor’s note-????) and voted for him for president. And that’s kind of natural. You’ve got a situation where the Republican Party has been strongly anti-immigration, and you’ve got a Hispanic community which is looking to the Democrats for help.”

“But that’s not important.”

We beg to differ, Senator Sanders.

Right now, in America, racism is the strongest it has been since the 50’s. We all remember what happened in Charlottesville last summer, and that is far from the only notorious example.

A Virginia newspaper ran a full KKK recruitment flyer as its front page ad earlier this week.

This week a video showed up online exhibiting a white manager of a Plano, Texas, restaurant making a blatant attempt to kick out a prominent black couple dining in his restaurant after they refused to give up their seat to a white customer. He threatened the couple with the police.

It is very important that the left be there for persons of color, especially at a time like this. The racist right is on the attack beyond anything recent decades have seen. We have to be there in stark opposition. It’s part of what it means to be a Democrat.

There is no word in the English language that the Democratic Socialist supporters of Bernie Sanders like to use more than progressive. They’re convinced they’re the only ones with any right to it.

But if progressive values do not include fighting racism and sticking up for at-risk groups, then what exactly is progressive about them?

The Bernie supporters who have been savaging Joy Reid ought to take a good look at themselves.
